Volleyball Snows Over Purdue 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (11-10 overall, 4-8 Big Ten), behind career highs of 36 and 24 kills by Rosie Snow and Dana Stearns defeated Purdue 3-1 (15-13, 10-15, 17-15, 15-5) in a two hour 28 minute match Saturday night in St. John Arena. Boilermaker Bev Krupa scored a career high of 26 kills for Purdue with Sarah Emke adding 15 and Aneska Arosarena 14.
The lead in game one changed hands 10 times and the score was tied nine times in a match that never saw a bigger lead than the two-point margin of the final 15-13 in favor of Ohio State. The Boilermakers held a 13-12 edge, but a block by Laura Stalling and Jen Flynn tied the game at 13. After a Purdue time-out and four sideouts, a Dana Stearns kill put OSU at game point and a block by Stearns and Anne Botica was for the game. The Buckeyes hit .253 to .246 for Purdue.
After an early 5-2 Purdue lead in game two, the Buckeyes tied the match at five and took a 7-5 lead. The Boilermakers then scored the next seven points to go up 12-7. OSU cut the lead to 13-10, but kills by Sarah Emke and Taryn Catlin for points ended the game at 15-10 in favor of Purdue. The Boilermakers hit .260 in the game to .152 for OSU.
Purdue opened a 4-0 lead in game three. The Boilermakers were up 6-2 when OSU put five points on the board with two kills by Angelee Abbring, one by Shellye Sills, an ace by Brianne Spiers and a Purdue error to lead 7-6. Two Buckeye errors however returned the lead to Purdue at 8-7. OSU’s block by Erin Baker and Jen Flynn, a kill by Rosie Snow, a kill by Flynn and a Purdue error put OSU up 11-8. Purdue responded with two kills by Bev Krupa and one by Connie Paul to tie the match at 11. A Sills-Abbring block put the Buckeyes back up at 12-11, but a hitting error tied the match at 12. OSU took a 13-12 lead on a block by Sills and Flynn, but Purdue tied the match with an OSU hitting error. Snow’s kill put OSU back in the lead at 14-13, but back-to-back blocks by Emke and Catlin and Emke and Arosarena put the Boilermakers at 15-14, serving game point. Snow’s sideout kill returned the ball to OSU and a kill by Snow and two Purdue errors closed the match for OSU at 17-15. Ohio State hit .196 in the game to .143 for Purdue. Game four saw OSU open a 5-0 lead and go up 7-3 with Purdue using it’s second time out. The Buckeyes extended the lead to 9-3 on Baker-Snow and Flynn-Baker blocks. The Boilermakers cut the lead to 10-5, but OSU finished out the game with the next five points for a 15-5 win for the match. The Buckeyes hit .410 in the game to .091 for the Boilermakers.
For the match, OSU hit .247 to .192 for the Boilermakers. OSU had the edge in blocks, 15 to 11, digs, 88 to 75 and aces, five to four. Both Jen Flynn and Erin Baker had team highs of six assist blocks, while Sarah Emke had a match high seven assist blocks. Jen Flynn had a match high 21 digs for OSU with Taryn Catlin recording 19 for Purdue.
Brianne Spiers returned to action after missing the last 14 matches with two ace serves and 14 digs.
