Volleyball falls to No. 17 Illinois – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (10-10 overall, 3-8 Big Ten) dropped a 3-1 (10-15, 3-15, 15-10, 11-15) decision to 17th ranked Illinois (16-5, 9-2) Thursday night in St. John Arena before 834 fans. Illini Mary Coleman scored a team high 18 kills with Christy Chapman and Betsy Spicer adding 13 each in the win. OSU’s Rosie Snow had a match high 24 kills to go with 11 by Dana Stearns.
%^$Ohio State held a 9-7 lead in game one before Illinois tied the match at nine on a solo block by Sara Sorrell. OSU sided out, but a serving error returned the ball to the Illini. Five consecutive points, two on ace serves by Mary Coleman, a block by Sorrell and Betsy Spicer and two OSU errors put Illinois at game point. A side out kill by Rosie Snow and an Illini error cut the margin to 14-10. An OSU service error returned the ball to Illinois and an OSU hitting error ended the game at 15-11. The Illini hit .200 to .128 for the Buckeyes.
%^$Six consecutive points by Illinois opened game two before OSU could side out. An Anne Botica kill cut the lead to 6-1, but Illinois scored the the next six points. OSU cut the lead to 12-3 on a kill by Botica and an ace serve by Dana Stearns. An Illini sideout allowed Illinois to run the final three points for a 15-3 win. For the game Illinois hit .571 to OSU’s .000.
%^$In a close third game that saw both teams take small leads early. The Buckeyes broke an 8-all tie with a solo block by Laura Stalling. The Illini tied the match at nine on a Christy Chapman kill. The Buckeyes regained the lead at 10-9 on a Shellye Sills overpass kill, but the Illini tied it again on a Mary Coleman kill. Ohio State took the lead for good on an overpass solo block by Sills. After a kill by Snow Illinois call a time out at 12-10. A block by Sills and Stearns raised the lead to 13-10 and Illinois called another timeout. After an exchange of sideouts a Snow kill put the score at 14-10. Another sideout exchange returned the ball to OSU and an Illini error ended the game at 15-10. The Buckeyes hit .292 in the game to .208 for Illinois.
%^$Illinois took a 4-0 lead in game four and increased it to 6-1. OSU closed to 6-5, but two Buckeye hitting errors put Illinois up 8-5. The Illini went up 11-6 before the Buckeyes on a kill by Snow and blocks by Sills and Stearns and Sills and Botica cut the lead to 11-9. Illinois had a 12-9 lead before kills by Snow cut the lead to 12-11. A solo block by Coleman a kill by Chapman and an OSU error closed the game for the Illini at 15-11. For the game Illinois hit .306 to .082 for OSU.
%^$The Illini hit .289 for the match to .146 for the Buckeyes. OSU had a 12-10 edge in blocking, the Illinois outdug the Buckeyes 55 to 36 and had the edge in aces, seven to five. Christy Chapman had a match high 13 digs, while Sara Sorrell and Betsy Spicer each had five blocks for Illinois. Buckeye Jen Flynn had a team high 11 digs, with Shellye Sills adding a team high five blocks.
