18th-ranked Volleyball Earns 3-0 Win over Purdue – Ohio State Buckeyes

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Angelee Abbring equalled her career high of 23 kills in leading Ohio State (8-4 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) to a three-game sweep of Purdue (7-5, 1-2), 16-14, 15-12, 18-16). The Buckeyes also received double figure kills from Rosie Snow (18) and Dana Stearns (17). Boilermaker Bev Krupa scored a team high 20 kills with Connie Paul and Colleen Henican having 10 each.
Purdue held a 7-2 lead in game one before OSU came together and slowly reduced the lead to finally go up 8-7. The Buckeyes were up 9-7 before three straight Purdue points took the Boilermakers to a 10-9 lead. OSU held a 13-10 lead before Purdue’s Bev Krupa had three consecutive kills to tie the score at 13. Taryn Catlin put Purdue up 14-13 with an ace serve and serving for the game. Sideout kills by Shellye Sills and Abbring kept Purdue from closing the game. OSU then scored three points off a block by Anne Botica, a Purdue hitting error and an Abbring kill to win the game 16-14. The Buckeyes hit .364 for the game to .211 for Purdue.
Ohio State opened a 7-1 lead in game two, but Purdue cut the lead and tie the game at 10, 11, and 12. An Abbring kill sided out to OSU and the Buckeyes scored the final three points on a Stearns’ kill and two Purdue hitting errors to allow OSU to win game two 15-12. OSU hit .229 in the game to .100 for the Boilermakers.
OSU’s 1-0 lead in game three was quickly replaced by a 5-2 Purdue lead. The game was tied at five and eight before a block by Purdue’s Henican put the Boilermakers up 9-8. The Buckeyes took a 14-10 lead and served for the match but committed an error. Purdue countered with five straight points to lead 15-14 and was serving for the game. The Buckeyes tied the game at 15 and the score was tied again at 16. An OSU block for the sideout and two kills by Snow finished the game, 18-16 and gave the Buckeyes their first Big Ten win of the season. OSU hit .323 in the game to .259 for Purdue.
Ohio State hit .306 for the match to .199 for Purdue. The Boilermakers held the advantage in digs (50-47), blocks (14-9), and aces (5-1). OSU’s Dana Stearns had a match-high 11 digs with Snow adding 10. Snow was the team leader with four blocks (three solo, one assists), while Sills (0-3) and Flynn (0-3) each recorded three. Flynn picked up 59 assists in the match. Purdue’s Henican and Paul shared match-high dig honors with 11 each. Paul picked up six assist blocks while Sarah Emke had five assists. Krupa and Paul each had two aces serves while Catlin recorded 40 assists. The Buckeyes travel to 20th-ranked Illinois (9-4, 2-1), a five-game loser to top-ranked Penn State (13-0, 3-0) in Champaign.
