Women’s Volleyball Falls to No. 22 Spartans 3-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State, ranked 21st in the USATODAY/AVCA Coaches Poll, ( 9-7 overall, 2-5 Big Ten) fell to the Spartans of Michigan State (12-3, 5-2), ranked 22nd, in four games. The 15-9, 15-10, 14-16, 15-9 Spartan win lasted two hours and eight minutes in front of 907 fans.
Rosie Snow had a team high 23 kills for Ohio State with Angleee Abbring adding 20 and Dana Stearns 16, but the Spartans countered with four players in double figures including a match-high 27 kills by Jenna Wrobel. Jenny Whitehead added 15, while Erin Hartley had 13 and Sarah Gustin 10. The Spartans outblocked the Buckeyes 22 to 14, with a match-high 10 blocks (three solo and seven assists by Gustin. Hartley added seven (3-4) and Jessica Sanborn six (2-4) for Michigan State. The Buckeye block was led by Laura Stalling with seven (1-6) and Shellye Sills with five (1-4).
Game one had ties at four, six, seven and nine before a block by Sanborn and Whitehead put the Spartans ahead for good at 10-9. Three OSU errors, a solo block by Hartley and a game winning kill by Whitehead closed the game at 15-9. Michigan State hit .311 to .205 for OSU.
Game two saw the Spartans open a 6-1 lead before OSU scored seven consecutive points to take an 8-6 lead. The Buckeyes went up 9-6 on an overpass kill by Sills. The Spartans came back to take a 10-9 lead on a kill by Hartley. The Buckeyes closed to 13-10, but assist blocks by Gustin and Hartley set up game point where Gustin’s solo block closed the game at 15-10. The Spartans hit .351 for the game to .167 for the Buckeyes.
The Spartans enjoyed a five point lead (11-6) before OSU closed the margin to 11-9. Michigan State blocked their way to match point (14-9) on blocks by Gustin and Hartley, a solo by Christie Landry and assist by Gustin and Landry. The Spartans had five match points but failed to score while OSU cut into the lead with a kill by Snow and assist blocks by Jen Flynn and Stalling and Abbring and Stalling. MSU had three unforced errors for points to put OSU up 15-14 where a Sills kill won the game for the Buckeyes, 16-14. OSU hit .132 to .058 for the Spartans.
OSU took an 8-4 lead in game four, but unforced errors for the Buckeyes quickly put the Spartans back in the lead at 11-8. Ohio State cut the lead to 11-9, but four consecutive points by the Spartans ended the match with a 15-9 MSU win. In the game, OSU hit .136 to Michigan State’s .276.
For the match, the Spartans hit .233 to .158 for the Buckeyes. MSU outblocked OSU 22 to 14, while the Buckeyes outdug the Spartans, 54 to 49 and had a five to two edge in ace serves.
Ohio State faces Michigan (10-7, 2-5) Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena, while the Spartans travel to top ranked Penn State (17-0, 7-0). Penn State defeated Michigan 3-0 (15-0, 15-5, 15-4) this evening at Penn State.
