COLUMBUS, Ohio— The Ohio State men’s tennis team added two players to its 2001-02 roster Monday. OSU head coach Ty Tucker announced the signing of Adrian Bohane of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Paul Warkentin of Santa Barbara, Calif.
Bohane has been ranked as high as the Top 20 in the nation for the junior division as well as being a mainstay in the Florida rankings. He has been in the Top 5 in Florida for the past five years. Some of his accomplishments include winning the Panama Bowl Championship in 1998 when he defeated Andy Roddick, then-No. 1 in the world junior rankings. Most recently, he finished in the Top 16 at the Super National Outdoor Championships in Kalamazoo, Mich., in August.
“Adrian is a big time talent who we think will be a Top 50 college player in the next couple of years,” Tucker said. “He has the size at 6-foot-3 to win matches in this conference (Big Ten) as a freshman.”
Warkentin is currently ranked No. 68 in the USTA’s junior division and has consistently ranked in the Top 5 in the southern California area rankings. In 2000, Warkentin lost in the finals of the Southern California Championships and also collected a Top 24 finish at the Super National Clay Court Championships at Louisville, Ky., in July.
“We feel we added a great player in Paul,” Tucker said. “He knows how to win and with his size, he will be a tough out for anyone in college tennis for four years. I am very excited that Paul chose Ohio State over many other schools.”
The Buckeyes open the spring season Jan. 13-15, at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
