Mens Lacrosse Upsets #23 Rutgers 11-9 – Ohio State Buckeyes

PISCASTAWAY – The Ohio State mens lacrosse team had high hopes coming into 1999 and showed why they harbored those hopes in knocking off 23rd ranked Rutgers (0-2) 11-9 in their first game of the season.
Freshman attacker Patrick Tracy (Baltimore, Md.) score three goals in the first two quarters to stake the Buckeyes to a 4-1 lead. After a Buddy Lange (Jr., Annandale, N.Y.) goal at the 5:58 mark of the second quarter, Rutgers answered to make it 5-3 at halftime.
Midfielder Greg Zytkowski (Jr., North Olmstead, Oh.) netted two goals in the second half to lead the attack during a back and forth third quarter. Leading 10-7 with under 6:00 left in the game, Rutgers was able to score two straight goals to pull within 10-9, but Zytkowski scored the second of his goals with 3:41 to close out the scoring and preserve the upset for the Buckeyes.
Goalie Mike Abeles (Jr., Westfield, N.J.) started off 1999 the way he finished last season: hot. He made 20 saves and faced 53 shots from a pressing Knight attack.
The Buckeyes will travel to the Universtiy of Maryland-Baltimore County next Saturday to take on Sacred Heart at 5:00 p.m.
