Loyola Takes No. 14 Buckeyes to 5, Wins 3-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 14 Ohio State (4-6, 0-3) fell to Loyola Chicago (7-5, 3-0) Thursday 3-2 at the Covelli Center. Three of the sets were extended in the close 25-22, 28-26, 25-23, 26-24, 16-14 loss to the Ramblers.

Jacob Pasteur lead Ohio State with 24 kills while hitting .429. Noah Platfoot finished with 47 assists and 10 digs. Parker Mikesch led the Buckeyes with 15 digs.

The Buckeyes are back home Sunday for a 3 p.m. match with Purdue Fort Wayne.

Set One: After a 3-0 run by Loyola to start the match, Ohio State came back and tied it at 5-all. The teams traded points until Loyola took a 14-12 lead off an Ohio State hitting error. Loyola built a three-point lead, 18-15, forcing Ohio State to take its first timeout. The Buckeyes came back and tied the score 21-all, forcing the first Ramblers timeout. Ohio State took its first lead, 23-22, on a block by Ethan Talley and Jacob Pasteur. The Buckeyes won the set 25-22 on a hitting error by Loyola after a 4-1 Ohio State run to end the set. The Buckeyes hit .263 while holding Loyola Chicago to .074. Samuel Clark led Ohio State with four kills.

Set Two: The Buckeyes took their first lead of the set at 5-4 with a big middle kill by Ethan Talley. An ace by Pasteur brought the score to 8-6, Buckeyes. The Ramblers, down 11-8, came back to take a 12-11 lead and the Buckeyes were forced to take their second timeout of the set. Samuel Clark tied the match 19-all with a right-side block. Ohio State called its second timeout after an ace put Loyola up 21-19. The Buckeyes tied the score 22-all and the Ramblers took their first timeout of the set. The Buckeyes and Ramblers traded points in overtime until Ohio State made a hitting error, ending the game 28-26. Loyola hit .393 while Ohio State hit .290.

Set Three: Loyola Chicago led the match 6-1 and Ohio State took its first timeout. Ohio State went on a 3-0 run and pulled the game to within two points, 9-7, before a service error turned the ball back over to the Ramblers. After trailing by four, Ohio State’s Clark tied the score 13-all. A Pasteur outside kill put the Buckeyes up 15-14 and after a 15-8 run by Ohio State, Loyola Chicago took a timeout. The Buckeyes began to pull away 20-16 and the Ramblers took another timeout. Loyola went on a 3-0 run and pulled to within one at 24-23 before another Clark kill, ended the match 25-23, Buckeyes. The Buckeyes hit .314 while the Ramblers managed .188.

Set Four: The teams traded points until Loyola took a 7-4 lead on a 4-1 run. Ohio State tied the game 10-all after a Rambler setting error. After trading four service errors, a big Loyola block put the Ramblers two points ahead of the Buckeyes, 16-14. Ohio State took a timeout after three errors, the Ramblers led 20-16. After a long rally that resulted in a Buckeye point, Loyola called a timeout leading, 22-21. Clark got a big kill that kept the Ramblers at set point and after a backrow attack by Pasteur, the set was tied at 24-all. A hitting error by Ohio State gave Loyola another set victory, 26-24.

Set Five: The teams traded points and were tied 3-all before a Pasteur kill brought Ohio State to a 4-3 lead. The Ramblers tied the set 5-all with two kills. Another Pasteur backrow attack brought the score to 6-5 Ohio State. The teams traded points and after two errors by Ohio State, Loyola led 11-9. A Pasteur ace brought the Buckeyes back to tie it at 12-all. Then another Pasteur kill forced Loyola Chicago to take a timeout. Ohio State took the next timeout with Loyola leading 14-13. Clark had a big kill on the right side to bring the set to 14-all, but after two errors by Ohio State, the Loyola Ramblers won the final set, 16-14.

The Buckeyes are back home Sunday for a 3 p.m. match vs. Purdue Fort Wayne. The Buckeyes will recognize the 2011 National Championship team between the second and third sets.
