Lexie Handley Named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio Graduate student Lexie Handley, a Mogadore, Ohio native, was named on Monday as the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference office announced. It’s the second time in the last four weeks that she’s taken home the honor.

Handley went 3-0 last week for the Buckeyes, pitching 27.1 innings and allowing just one earned run. She pitched two complete game shutouts, starting on Wednesday at No. 8 Kentucky when she struck out 11 and scattered just five hits. The Wildcats entered the game with the nation’s third-best team batting average and were shut out for the just the second time all season.

This past weekend at Michigan State, Handley went 2-0 and punctuated the weekend when a one-hitter yesterday in which she struck out nine Spartans as part of a 2-1 series-clinching win for the Buckeyes. On Friday, Handley allowed just three hits in a 3-0 series-opening shutout.

Handley is 13-3 on the season with a 1.56 earned run average, 14 complete games, four complete game shutouts and 147 strikeouts in 117.0 innings. She ranks in the top five in the Big Ten in wins, strikeouts, innings pitched, earned-run average and shutouts.

Ohio State (23-7, 4-2) is back in action this weekend at Buckeye Field when it hosts No. 9 Northwestern (24-5, 5-1). Friday’s game is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch, followed by a 2 p.m. start on Saturday at 1 p.m. series-finale on Sunday. Admission to all games at Buckeye Field is free. Parking is available in the lots surrounding Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium and Bill Davis Stadium.

Ohio State/Penn State Doubleheader Rescheduled
Ohio State’s scheduled doubleheader vs. Penn State, which was originally slated to be played tomorrow but postponed due to forecasted inclement weather, has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 19. The doubleheader will begin at 3 p.m. at Buckeye Field.
