COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophie Jaques has earned the final WCHA Defender of the Month awarded for the 2022-23 season, the conference announced Monday. The award is her third of the year.
In the defensive zone, Jaques helped the Buckeyes hold opponents to just 1.88 goals per game in February, the second best in the league. She blocked nine shots as Ohio State held its opponents to under 24 shots per game. The graduate student finished with a team-high and league-high plus-11 and was on the ice for 17 of Ohio State’s 32 goals scored in the month.
In February, Jaques led league defensemen with nine points. She tallied five assists in eight games, including two in the series against Wisconsin to help Ohio State win its first regular season title. She recorded at least a point in all but one game of the month for the Buckeyes.
The Toronto, Ont. native scored her first career hat trick with three goals in the Buckeyes’ WCHA quarterfinal matchup against Bemidji State last Friday to help the team defeat the Beavers, 4-1. It was the only hat trick recorded by a league player in February.
Jaques has now earned seven WCHA Defender of the Month awards over the last two seasons. She also picked up six Defender of the Week awards this year for 15 awards for her career.
Ohio State, the No. 1 seed of the WCHA tournament, meets No. 4 seed Minnesota Duluth this Friday, March 3 in the Final Faceoff semifinals. The game is set for 2 p.m. ET from Ridder Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The winner of Friday’s semifinal will advance to Saturday’s championship game. All three games of the Final Faceoff can be streamed on B1G+ (subscription required).
