COLUMBUS, Ohio – Sophie Jaques showed yet again just how clutch of a player she is in Ohio State’s 4-1 win over Bemidji State Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink. The graduate defenseman recorded a hat trick, scoring the team’s first three goals of the day, to help the No. 1 Buckeyes (29-4-2, 23-4-1 WCHA) take game one of the WCHA best-of-three quarterfinal series against the Beavers (5-29-1, 2-26-0 WCHA) in Columbus.
In the first game of the postseason for No. 1 seed Ohio State and No. 8 seed Bemidji State, Buckeye goaltender Amanda Thiele made 12 stops while Makenna Webster and Emma Maltais also added three points to give their team the 1-0 lead in the series.
How it Happened
- On just the second shot on goal of the day for Ohio State, Sophie Jaques ended her scoring drought with a goal at 1:38. She collected the puck right off the faceoff win from Emma Maltais, sending it through traffic and right over the shoulder of Bemidji State’s Hannah Hogenson.
- After the first period, Ohio State had recorded 14 shots on goal and was holding Bemidji State to just five. The Buckeyes came just inches away from extending their lead in the first period with two shots hitting the post in the opening frame.
- The Beavers tied the game at one with a goal from Makenna Deering at 5:43 in the second period, but Ohio State responded by only allowing two more shots on goal to Bemidji State for the remainder of the frame.
- As the clock was about to hit zero to close the second period, Jaques knocked the puck past Hogenson for the second time. Ohio State threw five shots at the Bemidji goal in the final 20 seconds of the frame, with Jaques hammering home the fifth with .2 seconds to play.
- Jaques completed the hat trick with her third goal at 12:40 in the third period. Paetyn Levis threw the puck from behind the goal line to Jaques, who was skating into the slot. Makenna Webster got a touch on the puck before Jaques sent it past Hodgenson to light the lamp again.
- Emma Maltais capitalized on the empty net with 1:01 left to play in the game to give Ohio State the 4-1 win.
