COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Ohio State women’s golfer Meg Mallon earned her second career win at the U.S. Women’s Open Sunday at the Orchards Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.
Mallon, who played for the Buckeyes from 1982-1985, tallied the lowest final round by a champion in the 59-year history of the event with a 6-under 65. She finished at 10-under 274 for a two-shot victory over Annika Sorenstam. It was her fourth career major and she earned $560,000 from the richest purse in women’s golf.
“The cup looked like a bucket, and it was a great day for that to happen,” Mallon said.
Mallon won her first Women’s Open at Colonial in 1991. The 13-year gap between wins at the event is the largest in history. At the age of 41, she also became the third-oldest player to win the title.
Ohio State alumnus Rosie Jones (1978-81) and Allison Hanna (2001-04) also fared well at the Women’s Open. Jones tied for 20th with a final mark of 288 (+4) while rookie Hanna tied for 32nd with a score of 291 (+7).
