Field Hockey Rallies for 5-2 Victory Over Ball State – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team (8-4, 1-0 Big Ten) rallied for a 5-2 victory over the Ball State Cardinals (5-8, 2-2 MAC) Wednesday in Muncie, Ind. The game marks the third consecutive year the Buckeyes have defeated the Cardinals.
Ball State’s Kirsty Houghton posted the first goal of the game at 19:23, to give the Cardinals an early lead. OSU freshman Lauren Kruse (Fr., Toledo, Ohio) tied the game on her first career goal at 27:11 assisted by Vanessa Immordino (Sr., Roseland, N.J.). Two minutes later Immordino gained the lead for the Buckeyes by scoring her first goal of the game. The OSU squad never looked back, defenseman Cammie Trainer (Jr., Hudson, Ohio) tallied her first goal of the season and second during her Buckeye career on a rebounded shot at 31:05. BSU midfielder Holly Frantz recorded an unassisted goal to cut OSU’s lead to one just before halftime. The Buckeyes outshot Ball State 14-5 in the first stanza.
Ohio State came out strong in the second half, as Immordino was able to convert on two corners opportunities for the Buckeyes. The goals came within five minutes of each and were assisted by Trainer, who recorded four points on the day. Senior Immordino posted seven points, which ties her career high that was set Sept. 23, 2001 against Iowa. OSU held BSU scoreless in the entire second half.
OSU goalkeeper Lindsay Williams (So.; Harrisburg, Pa.) put forth another fine performance against Ball State recording five saves, four of which were in the second half. Ball State goalkeeper Tracy Bannister tallied eight saves for the Cardinals. OSU outshot BSU 18 -11 and forced eight penalty corners to the Cardinals six.
The Buckeyes travel to University Park, Pa., where they will face the Penn State Nittany Lions at 6 p.m. Friday.
