Escobedo Alive in Singles at ITA/USTA Midwest Regional – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Senior Paloma Escobedo is the lone member of the Ohio State women’s tennis team remaining in competition at the ITA/USTA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich.
The Texas native battled past teammate Kara Cecil in straight sets in the third round of main draw singles, 6-1, 6-3. Escobedo will face top-seeded Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame at noon Monday for a spot in the semifinals.
Northwestern’s Kate Turvy knocked junior Kelsey Haviland out of main draw singles in the third round, 6-4, 6-4.
The duo of Haviland and sophomore Gabby Steele earned an upset victory against Frilling and Mathews of Notre Dame, the top-seeded tandem, in main draw doubles, 8-6, before falling to the Illinois twosome of White and Falkin, 8-6, in the semifinals.
The championship match for doubles will be played at 10 a.m. Monday while singles wraps up Tuesday morning.
The Midwest Regional is a qualifier for the ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 4-7 in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The singles finalists and doubles champions from regionals across the country earn automatic bids into the tournament.
