COLUMBUS, Ohio— Caitlin Conrad, a senior on the Ohio State softball team, has been named a 2015 team captain.
“I am pleased to announce that Caitlin has been added as a captain for this year’s team. She has shown the tenacious spirit that embodies what we want out of our entire program,” said head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly. “She is an example for all of our younger players in how to commit to something and work tirelessly to achieve it. The growth in her leadership throughout this year made this an easy decision for our staff.”
Conrad, from Richwood, Ohio, has played in 184 career games with 156 starts. This season, she is second on the team in batting average (.383), first in hits (44), doubles (eight), RBI (32) and second in runs scored (30). On defense, she has six assists from her position in the outfield. In a doubleheader sweep of Maryland last Sunday, Conrad went 4-for-9 with a grand slam in the first game as part of an 18-6 victory. In the second game, she made a diving catch in the fifth inning and then doubled off a runner at third base, saving the Buckeyes at least two runs.
Last season, Conrad enjoyed a breakout season on her way to earning Big Ten All-Tournament team accolades. She played in and started all 55 games in right field and was part of the “The Cannon Crew” with Taylor Watkins and Cammi Prantl that all batted over .300 and combined for over 100 runs and RBI and added 16 assists. At the plate, Conrad led the team in RBI (39), runs scored (44), home runs (nine) and slugging percentage (.600).
In the career record books, Conrad currently ranks eighth in RBI (102), sixth in home runs (22) and tied for 11th in runs scored (116). Her .309 career average is also 16th best in school history.
A community leadership major in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Conrad was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and Academic All-Big Ten member last year.
Conrad and the Buckeyes open a three-game series against Nebraska tomorrow at Buckeye Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
