COLUMBUS, Ohio – Kevin Burch, now in his fourth season as head coach of the Buckeyes, added two players Tuesday to the 2023 Ohio State men’s volleyball roster with the addition of Hudson Harris, a transfer from Charleston (West Virginia) and Ben Putnam, who will be a freshman with the Buckeyes next season.
Harris is a 6-foot-9-inch middle blocker from Orchard Park, New York. He originally signed with the University of Charleston, where he started the final eight matches of the season for the Golden Eagles.
Charleston was 5-10 prior to Harris cracking the starting lineup and 4-4 over the final stretch of the season. He hit .462 with 47 kills on 91 swings. He played in a total of 20 matches and 63 sets as a freshman.
“This program has been fortunate to have a strong connection to the Orchard Park area and we couldn’t be more excited to add to that with Hudson Harris,” Burch said. “I have never received as many unsolicited compliments about a recruit’s character than I did about Hudson. He is a hardworking, resilient, and unselfish young man who will make a positive impact to every aspect of this program.”
Putnam is a 6-5 outside hitter from Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Needham High School, where he lettered three times in volleyball while also playing basketball and soccer.
In 2021, Putnam was the Massachusetts Player of the Year in volleyball for the state champion Needham Rockets.
At the club level, Putnam played for Smash VBS as a setter from 2019-22.
“We are always excited to bring in well-rounded young men into our program and there is no question Ben fits that mold,” Burch said. “He brings an incredibly versatile skill set on the court along with high character, intelligence, and work ethic off the court. We’re excited to see the impact Ben will have on this program and couldn’t be happier he’ll be in Scarlet & Gray this fall.”
Harris and Putnam join Dan Hurley (6-8, OH/OPP), Jack O’Riordan (6-8, OH), Shane Wetzel (6-7, OPP), and Niko Williams (6-6, S) in the 2023 signing class, one ranked No. 4 nationally in the 2023 signing class.
