COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team played its first opponent in Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday as it faced off against Lafayette for a preseason scrimmage. The game was a celebration of Buckeye lacrosse successes both on and off the field as fans were welcomed into the new home of Ohio State lacrosse to watch teams coached by Buckeyes.
“We are really thankful,” Ohio State head coach Nick Myers said. “It’s been an awesome couple of days with the ribbon cutting yesterday and having our donors, Buckeye family and alumni here that made this day possible. We feel like we have one of the premier lacrosse venues in the country. It’s really special. The men are getting more comfortable; we’ve had now a little bit over a week in here to practice and now our first day with some competition and fans. It was a great step for sure.”
Both sidelines featured coaches with ties to the Buckeye lacrosse brotherhood. Under the leadership of 15th-year head coach Nick Myers, the Buckeyes are also coached by 2015 alum Rick Lewis. Lewis was a captain for Ohio State in 2015 and was a two-time hammer winner for the Buckeyes. He joined the Buckeye coaching staff in 2020.
Lafayette is led by head coach Pat Myers, Ohio State men’s lacrosse alumni and younger brother of Nick Myers, and Jud Hall, a former volunteer assistant for the Buckeyes. Myers, in his fifth season at the helm of the Leopards’ program, is a 2003 Ohio State graduate. He was named the GWLL Rookie of Year his freshmen season in 2000 and helped lead the program to its first NCAA appearance in 2003. Hall was a four-year Ohio State volunteer assistant coach, helping the Buckeyes to NCAA quarterfinal appearances in 2013 and 2015, a regular-season ECAC championship in 2014 and an ECAC Tournament championship in 2013.
Prior to the first face off, Lewis and Pat Myers were joined by Ohio State fifth-year attackman Jack Myers for a ceremonial ribbon cutting.
“Lafayette is an excellent team, and more than that, they are a brotherhood as well. It just made a lot of sense to open the stadium with a couple of alums. To have Coach Lewis out there and Coach Myers, two Buckeyes, and Jack Myers cut the ribbon, it was really a special moment for Buckeye lacrosse.”
The Buckeyes will host one more scrimmage, set for next Saturday, Jan. 28 at noon against Robert Morris, before officially opening the 2023 season against Air Force on Feb. 4 at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium.
