COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State rowing team is set to make its 22nd appearance at the NCAA Championships Friday through Sunday after securing an automatic bid, one of 11, after winning the program’s 10th Big Ten Championship May 15 in Indianapolis.
The Buckeyes are one of three Big Ten teams to compete in the 2022 Championships. The NCAA event is being held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
Ohio State’s First Varsity Four is seeded No. 4, the First Varsity Eight is the No. 6 seed and the Second Varsity Eight boat is seeded No. 10.
The First Varsity Eight kicks things off Friday in the third heat at 9:24 a.m. Friday. The Second Varsity Eight is in the second heat of that event with a 10 a.m. start. The Buckeyes are in the final heat of the First Varsity Four event. That race starts at 11:12 a.m.
The Buckeyes are one of 22 teams who will compete at the championships. Each school will field two eight boats and one four boat for the championship event.
BUCKEYES IN THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Ohio State comes into the championships having competed in each NCAA regatta held since 2000 (21 total). The Buckeyes own seven individual boat titles and has finished in the Top-10 a total of 20 times.
The Buckeyes won NCAA national titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The team finished second in 2016 and owns one third (2007) and two fourth-place (2001, 2005) finishes. Ohio State placed sixth in 2021.
The 2022 NCAA Championships will be the second for Kate Sweeney as head coach of the Buckeyes. She guided Ohio State to a sixth-place finish a season ago. Click HERE for for the 2021 NCAA Championship results.

The Buckeyes won the 2022 Big Ten Championships with a total of 184 points. Ohio State crossed the finish line first in the first novice eight, second varsity four, first varsity four and first varsity eight races while earning second place in the second novice eight, third varsity four and second varsity eight contests. Several Buckeyes earned Big Ten recognition following the championship regatta. Sisters Anneta and Maria Kyridou along with Lexie Nothdurft were named 2022 First Team All-Big Ten. Alessandra Montesano and Rachel DeWitte earned second team honors. Leandra Hogrefe was selected as Ohio State’s Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Sweeney, now in her third season as head coach of the Buckeyes, was named the 2022 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Anneta Kyridou was named the conference Freshman of the Year.

Noting the Buckeyes
Ohio State is racing its seventh regatta of the season and fifth on the road. Ohio State finished second in three-of-four races at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas, April 30 prior to the Big Ten Championships. Results from those races can be found HERE. Ohio State won 15-of-16 races in the Ohio State Invitational at the Griggs Reservoir in the final home regatta of the season. Click HERE for complete results.

Sweeney guided the Buckeyes to a sixth-place finish at the 2021 NCAA Championships and to a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships in 2021. In all, Ohio State owns 10 Big Ten championships and 52 individual boat titles.
During the offseason, six Buckeyes participated in the Tokyo Olympics. Three of those performers are rowing for the Buckeyes this season. Alessandra Montesano took the 2021 season off from collegiate competition to row for Italy at the Olympics. Incoming freshmen Maria and Anneta Kyridou rowed for Greece. Also back for the 2022 Buckeyes are 2021 All-Americans Rachel DeWitte and Jessy Vermeer. The duo, along with the departed Leonie Heuer, were 2021 College Rowing Coaches Association Pocock All-America squad members a season ago.
The Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame added another former Buckeye rower to its roster last fall when Amanda Purcell was inducted. The former walk-on rowed for Ohio State from 2003-05 and became a first team Pocock All-America as a senior. For more on her career and induction into the Athletics Hall of Fame, go HERE.
