COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s rowing team finished No. 6 nationally Sunday behind a pair of Top 5 Grand Final efforts at the 2021 NCAA Championships. The event was held at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida.
Ohio State has now finished in the Top 6 in each of the last nine NCAA Team Championships.
The Ohio State 2V8 (No. 4) and 1V4 (No. 5) placed well in the finals with the 1V8 winning in the petite finals to finish No. 7 nationally.
Entering the championships, Ohio State’s First Varsity Four and Second Varsity Eight boats were seeded No. 6. The First Varsity Eight was seeded No. 7.
SUNDAY RACES
The Ohio State 1V4 outlasted Michigan for the No. 5 spot in the grand finals marking the sixth-consecutive season the Buckeyes finished in the Top 5 nationally in this boat category. The Ohio State time of 7:14.244 was just ahead of No. 6 Michigan (7:15.716). Washington earned the national title with a time of 7:02.172.
The Buckeyes also had its 2V8 in the grand finals. Ohio State finished in the No. 4 spot for its highest finish nationally since it also finished fourth in 2017. The Buckeyes (6:32.086) battled Virginia (6:33.288) and Michigan (6:36.314) the entire race but edged UVA and the Wolverines in the end. Washington won the national title with a time of 6:23.323.
In the petite final for the 1V8, the Buckeyes won with a time of 6:27.717 to finish in the No. 7 spot nationally. Ohio State has been in the Top 7 in the NCAA Championships in each of the last eight years. The 1V8 Grand Final, the last race of the day, has been delayed by weather.
SATURDAY RACES
The Buckeye 1V8 semifinal race was scheduled for 8:36 a.m. Saturday but an equipment issue with one of the teams changed the order of the races. The Buckeyes were moved to the second semifinal race vs. Alabama, Rutgers, Michigan, Texas and Syracuse. The Top 3 finishers advanced to the grand finals Sunday (positions 1-6). The remaining teams advanced to the petite finals (7-12) at 10:36.
The Buckeyes battled Big Ten foes Michigan and Rutgers for a Top 3 finish and a chance to advance to the Grand Finals Sunday but Ohio State came up just short, finishing fourth in the second semifinal race Saturday with a time of 6:17.009 just behind Rutgers at 6:14.057.
Ohio State’s 2V8 semifinal, scheduled for 9:24 a.m., was contested against SMU, Michigan, Washington, California and Wisconsin.
The Buckeyes earned a spot in the Grand Finals Sunday with a second-place finish in a hotly contested race in the semifinals. Ohio State was in fourth place after the 1,000-meter mark but moved to the No. 2 spot at 1,500 meters and held off Michigan and California behind semifinal winner Washington. The Nos. 2-4 finishers were separated by less than one second. The Top 3 positions advanced to the grand finals (10:28 a.m. Sunday).
In the 1V4 semifinal, the Buckeyes started at 10:12 a.m. in the second semifinal vs. Washington, Virginia, Texas, Rutgers and Duke.
Ohio State will have a pair of boats racing for a national title after the 1V4 finished in the No. 3 spot of its semifinal race Saturday. The Buckeyes battled Rutgers the entire race for the third and final spot in the grand finals at 10:12 a.m. Sunday.
FRIDAY RACES
The Buckeyes finished in the No. 2 spot in the opening 1V8 race while both the 2V8 and 1V4 won their respective heats Friday. All three boats advanced to the AB semifinals Saturday.
Ohio State took the early lead in the 1V8 race battling Washington through the first 5oo meters. The Huskies took the lead by two seats at 1,000 meters and then built a sizeable advantage before defeating the Buckeyes by just under seven seconds.
In the 2V8 morning race, Syracuse and Virginia battled early over the first 500 meters before the Buckeyes took control, coming from three seats down, to take the lead for good at about the 1,500-meter mark for the seven-second win over Virginia.
The final race of the day for the Buckeyes was the 1V4 boat in a heat vs. rival Michigan, who defeated the Buckeyes earlier this month at the Big Ten Championships.
The Buckeyes trailed the Wolverines, who got out to a quick start, by about a half a boat at 350 meters. The Buckeyes then began to charge taking the lead at the 1,000 meter mark. Ohio State led the rest of the way for the six-second win.
The Buckeyes are one of 22 teams who will compete at the championships. Each school will field two eight boats and one four boat for the championship event.
BUCKEYES IN THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Ohio State comes into the championships having competed in 20 of the last 22 NCAA championships all-time. The team owns seven individual titles and has finished in the Top-10 a total of 18 times.
The Buckeyes won NCAA national titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The team finished second in 2016 and owns one third (2007) and two fourth-place (2001, 2005) finishes.
In 2019, the last NCAA Championship held in rowing, the Buckeyes finished fifth overall. The First Varsity Four finished fifth. The First Varsity Eight finished sixth overall and the Second Varsity Eight finished fifth.

The Buckeyes finished second at the 2021 Big Ten Championships with a total of 158 points. The Second Novice Eight won the conference title, while five of the six other Buckeye crews all finished in the top three of their respective races. For more click HERE.
