
Buckeyes Earn No. 3 Seed, Set to Host No. 6 Penn State in B1G Tournament Quarterfinals

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 9-ranked Ohio State men’s hockey team finished the regular season in third place in the Big Ten standings, earning the third seed and home ice for the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. The Buckeyes will host No. 10 ranked and No. 6 seed Penn State in a best-of-three series in Value City Arena this weekend. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday. If necessary, game three will be at 5 p.m. Sunday.

The teams also met in Columbus last season in a quarterfinal series. The Buckeyes, the No. 4 seed, won game one 4-3 before the Nittany Lions, the No. 5 seed, took games two and three, 3-2 and 2-1. The programs met on Ohio State home ice in the semifinals in 2019. The No. 1 seed Buckeyes, who had a quarterfinal round bye, fell to No. 4 Penn State, 5-1. The first conference tournament matchup was a neutral site game in the quarterfinals in 2014. In the single elimination tournament at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, No. 5 Ohio State topped No. 4 Penn State, 3-1.
In the 2022-23 regular season, the Buckeyes and Nittany Lions split both series. In State College Dec. 2-3, Penn State won 2-1 before a 4-3 Buckeye victory. In Columbus Feb. 3-4, the Nittany Lions were 4-3 winners in the opener before a 4-2 Buckeye victory.
This is the fifth time Ohio State in the last seven years Ohio State has finished among the Top 3 teams in the final Big Ten standings.
