Blaz Rola Earns Big Ten Athlete of the Week Honors – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Blaz Rola, a sophomore on the No. 2 Ohio State men’s tennis team, was named the Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Rola, a native of Slovenia, has now earned seven conference weekly honors, including six laurels during the 2011-12 season.
Rola and the Buckeyes will resume action in Columbus this weekend at the new Ohio State University Outdoor Tennis Center. The Scarlet and Gray will host Nebraska at 6 p.m. Friday before a doubleheader Sunday. Ohio State will welcome Iowa at noon and then Youngstown State at 5 p.m.*
During the Buckeyes’ stretch of three road matches in a span of seven days, Rola, ranked sixth in the nation in singles, recorded three wins at No. 1 singles and doubles combined and a victory at No. 2 singles for a 4-0 record. For the season, Rola is 24-3 overall (16-1 dual) in singles play and 31-3 overall (16-2 dual) in doubles.
At Georgia March 21, Rola defeated No. 8 Will Spencer 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1 singles before teaming with senior Chase Buchanan to down No. 31 Ignacio Toboada and Hernus Pieters 8-3 on court one. The No. 1- ranked Buckeye tandem followed that impressive performance with an 8-6 victory at Indiana vs. Jeremy Langer and Isade Juneau at No. 1 doubles March 25. After his doubles victory in Bloomington, Rola played No. 2 singles and beat Josh MacTaggart 6-1, 6-2.
