Buckeyes Late Comeback Falls Short Against TCU in NCAA Quarterfinals

Ohio State ends the 2026 season 32-5
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 3 Ohio State's season ended in the NCAA Quarterfinals Thursday after being defeated by No. 2 TCU, 4-3, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia.
The Buckeyes went down 2-0 before fighting back to tie the match at 3-3. In a tightly contested match on court one, TCU pulled ahead and grabbed the last singles victory to earn the match win.
The Big Ten regular season champion Buckeyes finished the year at 32-5 overall after having reached the quarterfinals in the NCAA Tournament for the 18th time in program history.
Ohio State dropped the doubles point with losses on courts two and three. In singles, Preston Stearns, Bryce Nakashima and Nikita Filin all earned victories to tie the match at 3-all. In a third set thriller, Aidan Kim was defeated, knocking the Buckeyes out of the NCAA Tournament.
It was the fifth time this season the Buckeyes have dropped the doubles point, overall they were 2-3 in the 2026 dual season when they lost the doubles point.
TCU and Ohio State have only played each other in tournament play, the match marked the fifth time the Buckeyes and Horned Frogs have faced off in the NCAA Tournament.
Doubles

On court three, the Horned Frogs got the best of Alexander Bernard and Alex Okonkwo, sweeping them, 6-0, to earn the first singles victory.

Aidan Kim and Bryce Nakashima got down, 2-5, quick before winning two-consecutive games to draw closer but TCU grabbed the last game to clinch the doubles point over Ohio State. The loss ended a 11 match winning streak for the Buckeye pair.

In a tight match on court one, Brandon Carpico and Nikita Filin were down 4-5 when the doubles point was clinched for the Horned Frogs.
Singles

After dropping the doubles point, the Buckeyes needed four singles victories to advance to the NCAA Tournament Semifinals. Ohio State and TCU split first sets with three wins each.

On court six Alexander Bernard was defeated in two sets to give the Horned Frogs a 2-0 lead.

The Buckeyes grabbed their first point on court two after Preston Stearns dominated the first set, 6-2, and battled through a tough, 7-5, set to cut the Horned Frogs lead in half, 2-1.

On court five, Bryce Nakashima sprinted through the first set, winning 6-2. In the second set, Nakashima battled with TCU's Albert Pedrico Kravtsov and forced a tiebreaker. Nakashima and Kravtsov were tied at 6-6 before Nakashima won two-consecutive points to tie the score at 2-all.

TCU gained the lead back on court three after Jack Anthrop was defeated by No. 55 Cooper Woestendick in two sets. Anthrop took Woestendick to a tiebreaker in the second set and was up 4-2 before falling to Woestendick, giving the Horned Frogs a 3-2 lead and in need of one more singles victory.

Nikita Filin started off slow in singles and dropped the first set 2-6, he fought back and tied it at a set a piece with a 6-3 win. The third set came down to the wire where Filin won a break and served to win the match and knot Ohio State with TCU, 3-3. It was Filin's 20th-consecutive singles victory, he ended the season 25-1 in dual singles competition.

In the deciding match, No. 8 Duncan Chan and No. 11 Aidan Kim battled through three sets. Kim took the first set 6-4 and was tied at 3-all in the second set before Chan downed Kim 6-4. In the last set, Chan defeated Kim 6-3 to knock Ohio State out of the NCAA Tournament.
