COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s hockey players Madison Bizal and Emma Maltais have earned WCHA Player of the Week awards following the team’s regular-season finale at Wisconsin. Bizal is the conference’s Defender of the Week and Maltais is the Forward of the Week.
Bizal had one of the best games of her career on Sunday, recording three points in the team’s 3-1 win over Wisconsin to claim the 2022-23 WCHA regular season title. She scored the game-winning goal and added a power play goal in the final minute of play at LaBahn Arena to help the team secure the Julianne Bye Cup. Bizal also assisted the game-tying goal. She blocked seven shots on the day as Ohio State held the Badgers to a one-goal performance. She finished the weekend plus-2 and was on the ice for six of Ohio State’s eight goals in the series.
Maltais scored big goals in key moments for the Buckeyes last weekend. She helped Ohio State overcome a four-goal first period deficit against the Badgers on Saturday, scoring the team’s second of three consecutive goals. She added her second goal of the day to tie the game at 5-5 with 2:19 left in the third quarter, sending the game to overtime. In Sunday’s game, the Burlington, Ont. native again tallied the game-tying goal for the Buckeyes, scoring the team’s first goal with under 5:00 to play in the third period. She added an assist on the game-winning goal to help the Buckeyes take home the Julianne Bye Cup for the first time in program history.
With four points on the weekend, Maltais became the first Ohio State skater to reach 200 career points. She is the program record holder in career points (200) and assists (136).
Postseason play starts this weekend for No. 1 Ohio State as the Buckeyes host Bemidji State in the first round of the WCHA tournament at the OSU Ice Rink.
