COLUMBUS, Ohio — Fans returned to the Covelli Center Thursday to witness the wrestle-off finals to determine the lineup for the 2021-22 Ohio State Wrestling Team. The squad was divided into Team Black and Team White and after nine bouts, Team White prevailed, 24-15.
Malik Heinselman got the night started with a win by technical fall (17-2) in the 125-pound match. Next up at 133, Andre Gonzales scored three points for Team Black with a 3-2 decision over Dylan Koontz.
The 141-pound match went to overtime tied 6-6 after regulation. Jordan Decator won 8-6 with a sudden victory takedown.
Team White tied the match at 11-all after Carson Kharchla (165) won by technical fall (19-4) over Cade Hepner.
Ethan Smith put Team Black back in the lead (15-11) with a major decision victory (16-7) over Fritz Schierl. Rocky Jordan then tied the match at 15-all with a 16-4 major decision win over Gavin Bell at 184.
Gavin Hoffman broke the tie and put Team White back on top, scoring five team points with a 19-4 win by technical fall over Tyler Stein at 197.
In the final bout of the night, Tate Orndorff secured the win (24-15) for Team White with a 20-6 major decision win over Mike Misita.
The first regular-season match of the season will be against North Carolina Nov. 7 (1 p.m.).
