PROVIDENCE, R.I-The Ohio State women’s hockey team (5-5-2 overall, 2-4-2 in the WCHA) defeated the Providence College Friars (3-5-2 overall, 1-2-1 in the ECAC East), 4-3, Sunday at PC’s Schneider Arena. The non-league contest marked OSU head coach Jackie Barto’s first meeting with her former squad and alma mater. Barto spent five years at the helm of PC women’s hockey, compiling a 70-53-10 overall mark and leading the Friars to the 1995 ECAC Championship title.
Both goaltenders saw five shots in the first period as both teams had about the same number of scoring opportunities. Less than one minute after Emily Hudak (Jr., Marblehead, Mass./Cushing Academy) and PC’s Rush Zimmerman were issued coincidental minors, the Friars converted on a 4-on-4. Carrie Holldorf tallied for PC from Meredith Roth at 13:07 in the first. With 21 seconds remaining in the period, Jeanne Chapple (So., Vadnais Heights, Minn./Mounds View) put the Buckeyes on the board with her third goal of the weekend. Hudak and Emma Laaksonen (So., Espoo, Finland/Makelanrinteen) set up Chapple’s wrist shot to the left corner of the Friar net.
Thirty-two seconds into the second stanza, PC took a 2-1 lead. Jenn Butsch scored her fifth of the season from Christa Talbot. Laaksonen tied the game at two when her high shot lofted over PC goalie Amy Quinlan’s right shoulder at 6:49 in the second. The power-play goal was Laaksonen’s second of the season. Jeni Creary (Fr., Shell Lake, Saskatchewan/Notre Dame College) put Ohio State ahead, 3-2, when she tipped Shana Frost’s (Jr., Frankford, Ontario/Bayside) shot past Quinlan at 12:15. Hudak recorded the secondary assist on the goal, Creary’s 12th of the season. The Buckeyes killed off four penalties and part of a fifth in the period behind Melissa Glaser’s (So., Rockford, Ill./St. Mark’s) solid netminding.
Meaghan Mulvaney (Fr., Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Northview) received a double minor for roughing at 7:58 in the third, causing a 4-on-3. The Buckeyes were forced to kill off four minor penalties in the first half of the period. At 13:11, the other half of the Buckeye specialty teams unit went back to work. Laaksonen nabbed her second power-play goal of the afternoon with a strong shot from the point. Hudak had the assist, her third of the game. The Friars pulled within one with 38 seconds remaining in the game. Holldorf tallied a 6-on-4 power-play goal but it would not be enough.
Providence outshot Ohio State, 26-16, and Glaser recorded 24 saves. PC split time between two goaltenders. Quinlan stopped seven Buckeye shots in 32:15, while Amy Thomas played 26:36 and tallied five saves.
The Buckeyes converted on two of five power-play opportunities and the Friars were 1-for-8 with the man advantage.
