COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s hockey’s Sophie Jaques is the 2022-23 WCHA Player of the Year, the conference announced Thursday.
The two-time Patty Kazmaier top-10 finalist was also named the league’s Defender of the Year for the second consecutive season earlier this week.
Jaques is one of the top blueliners in the country this season, helping Ohio State to top-10 rankings in scoring defense (1.78) and team goals against average (1.76). She has 44 blocked shots this season and has helped the team hold opponents to an average of just 20.89 shots per game.
On the other side of the ice, she is one of the top point producers in the country. Her 46 points lead defensemen nationally. She ranks top-20 in the country in points and top-10 in goals (22). She is the top scoring defender this year.
Jaques is a key part of the Buckeyes’ nation-leading power play with eight power play goals and 11 power play points on the year.
The Ohio State record holder for points by a defenseman, Jaques currently stands at 154 points on 59 goals and 95 assists and is one goal from tying the WCHA record for career goals by a defenseman. Jaques is second in league history in career points.
Jaques is just the second Buckeye to win the award following Tessa Bonhomme in 2006.
