COLUMBUS, Ohio – For the third time this season, Ohio State women’s hockey’s Sophie Jaques has earned Defender of the Week honors by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). Jaques led the Buckeyes with three goals and eight blocked shots in last weekend’s top-ranked series against Minnesota.
The Toronto, Ont. native scored one of Ohio State’s two goals in game one against the Gophers last Friday at the OSU Ice Rink. In the second game of the series, Jaques recorded both game-tying goals, and both Scarlet & Gray power play goals of the game, for the Buckeyes. While the team earned a 4-4 tie against the Gophers, Jaques also scored a penalty shot to help Ohio State take the shootout win, and two conference points, over Minnesota. She was also on the ice for five of the Buckeyes’ six goals in the series.
On the other side of the ice, Jaques led the Buckeyes with eight blocked shots on the weekend. The graduate student played a key part in holding the Gophers, who were averaging 45.00 shots per game, to 63 in the entire series.
Jaques currently leads the country in goals per game (1.00) and power play goals (5). The blueliner paces the Buckeyes with 15 points this year on 10 goals and five assists. She had tallied more than half of Ohio State’s eight power play goals this season, helping the Buckeyes to the second-best power play percentage (.381) in the country.
Jaques, who is currently pursuing a master’s degree in civil engineering, continues to build on her incredibly successful senior season, during which she achieved record numbers for the Buckeyes and across the sport while leading Ohio State to its first national championship. She is one of 19 nominees for the 2022 AAU James E. Sullivan Award who has advanced to the public voting round. The award honors the top amateur athlete in the United States.
Ohio State continues its conference slate this weekend, traveling to Mendota Heights, Minn. to play St. Thomas. The Buckeyes and Tommies faceoff at 7 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday from the St. Thomas Ice Arena.
