ORLANDO – The Ohio State dance team competed over the last two days at the UDA College National Championships in Orlando, Fla. and the Buckeyes and making the trip home to Columbus with some well-earned hardware.
Ohio State won a double national championship, claiming crowns in both the Division IA Jazz and Pom divisions. The wins came after performances in the finals on Wednesday afternoon and evening.
“This season was unlike any other and I am most proud of the resilience the team showed through an extended season,” said head coach Melissa McGhee. “They did not let circumstances beyond their control define them and pushed through with passion and determination to produce two amazing routines! This was a total program effort – our choreographers and consultants, support staff, administration, parents and alumni all contributed to this year’s success!”
The Buckeyes’ title in the pom division came of the strength of a 96.42 score in the finals, which was nearly two points better than runner-up Minnesota. Ohio State scored a 96.1833 in the semifinals, which was also the event’s top score.
In jazz, Ohio State once again topped Minnesota in both the semifinals and finals. The Buckeyes’ score in the finals was 96.35 after a 95.75 showing the semifinals.
“This team’s journey was far from an easy one, but that’s what makes this moment so rewarding,” said senior Maddie Smith. “In a year where practices, events and even nationals were not promised, this team found an internal drive and motivation to maximize our potential this season. Winning two nationals championships is the icing on the cake to an already fulfilling UDA Nationals. I am so proud of this team and their determination to accomplish our lofty goals.”
This year’s double title extends a championship run for the program that began in 2018 when it won both the D1A Jazz and D1A Pom divisions. The program has now won a total of six national championships. And this year’s group of seniors have been particularly accomplished: they won both jazz and pom titles in 2018, just a pom title in 2019, just jazz in 2020 and both again in 2021. The senior group consists of Maddie Smith, Kendall Kropp and Mia Snaidauf.
“I am so proud of what the team has accomplished to get to this moment,” said Kropp, an exercise science education major. “Even though this year looked different and we had many obstacles to overcome, we stayed locked in as a team every step of the way. These two titles represent the love, dedication, and hard work we put into the season.”
