Makayla Waterman served as a student assistant coach for the 2019-20 season as she was granted a waiver by the NCAA. She provided on and off court assistance throughout the year as well as being a liaison between the players and coaches.

The 2019-20 season was a good first season from a coaching side for Waterman and the Buckeyes. The team welcomed in seven new players to the roster, and while there were ups and downs, the team was playing its best basketball down the stretch. The Buckeyes won six in-a-row in February, 10 out of their final 13 overall and made a run to the Big Ten Tournament Championship game. They were projected as anywhere from a fix, six or seven seed in the NCAA Tournament before the COVID-19 outbreak put a halt to the sports world. Overall, they were 21-12 and finished fifth in the Big Ten at 11-7.

Waterman spent the five years in the program as a player for head coach Kevin McGuff. She lettered each of her last four years after redshirting in 2014-15. Over her four years, she played in 126 games and was part of two Big Ten championship teams and played in three NCAA Tournaments.

The Kettering, Ohio native graduated with her undergraduate degree in psychology in 2018 and then began the masters of sport coaching program. She will finish her degree in May of 2019 while getting on the job training this season.
