Jarred Martin enters his seventh season leading the Ohio State field hockey program in the fall of 2023 and unquestionably has it positioned for success for many years to come.
Martin and the Buckeyes have won 56 games in his first six seasons including 15 over teams ranked in the Top 25 and seven against top-10 ranked foes. He's also helped the Buckeyes become a force in the Big Ten and a perennially top-20 ranked team nationally.Â
Last season, in the fall of 2022, Martin’s Buckeyes were 11-8 overall and qualified for the Big Ten Tournament, which was held in Columbus at Buckeye Varsity Field for the first time since 2013. Ohio State won eight of its final 10 regular season games, including shutout victories over No. 5 Iowa and No. 16 UAlbany. Individual highlights included senior Emma Goldean being named third team All-American as well as a finalist for the Big Ten Medal of Honor, which is the highest honor given within the conference to student-athletes.
The 2019 squad featured one of the nation’s best offenses – it was 10th in the country in goals per game (3.06 per game) – and one of the best freshmen in school history: Mackenzie Allessie, who earned third-team All-American honors. After the COVID-19 pandemic moved the 2020 fall season to the spring of 2021, Martin guided the Buckeyes to wins in seven of their final nine games and a spot in the Big Ten Tournament title game for the first time in 11 years including back-to-back overtime wins against No. 15 Penn State and No. 4 Northwestern.
In 2018, The Buckeyes won 12 games – the most in a season for Ohio State since 2011 – and advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals after a 1-0 double overtime win vs. No. 10 Rutgers. That was one of five wins that season over ranked opponents. His inaugural team in 2017 also made the Big Ten Semifinals and went 8-3 in non-conference games.
In addition to helping the Buckeyes win on the field, Martin has also created a culture of achievement in the classroom. Ohio State continues to raise the bar in its number of OSU Scholar-Athletes and NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad honorees. In 2021, the Buckeyes had 18 such members, the most in Martin’s six-year tenure.
Martin’s coaching experience also reaches beyond the collegiate level as he has been involved in the U.S. coaching system. Martin earned a Level III Accreditation from USA Field Hockey in the summer of 2010. He was named the USA Women’s U17 National Team Head Coach in June of 2015 after serving as an assistant coach with the team for previous four years. Following that coaching stink, Martin took over the reigns as the head coach of the U21 United States national team for two years.Â
Martin, a native of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., retired from the U.S. Men’s National field hockey squad in the spring of 2012 after 12 years playing on the team. As the starting forward, Martin traveled to over 25 countries on four continents representing the United States. One of the team leaders in goals and caps, he competed in three Pan American Games, two Olympic Qualifiers, two World Cup Qualifiers and three Pan American Cups. He ended his career with 104 caps.
A graduate of the University at Albany, Martin earned a bachelor of science degree in biochemistry in 2005 after receiving Dean’s List recognition each semester and graduating magna cum laude. He completed a masters in sports administration in May, 2012.
