Carey Hoyt serves as the Deputy Director of Athletics at The Ohio State University, where she plays a pivotal role in shaping the student-athlete experience. She serves as the sport administrator for football, women’s basketball, and the Spirit Program, while also leading Ohio State’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) initiatives. Additionally, she oversees the Eugene D. Smith Leadership Institute, providing comprehensive leadership and career development programming for all Buckeye student-athletes.
A highly decorated head coach for women’s gymnastics, Hoyt was named National Coach of the Year (2012) and twice earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors (2007, 2011). She was also recognized as NCAA Central Region Coach of the Year in 2009 and 2012. Over her coaching career, she mentored five All-Americans and helped elevate Ohio State gymnastics to national prominence. Under her leadership, the Buckeyes achieved a 10th-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships, the program’s best result in over 25 years.
Since moving to athletics administration in 2017, Hoyt has been instrumental in advancing Ohio State’s commitment to competitive excellence, innovation in the NIL space, and student-athlete development. Her leadership has had a direct impact on the football program, providing strategic support to coaches, staff, and student-athletes in areas such as recruiting, operations, and player development. As a former head coach, she uniquely understands the demands and pressures coaches face, allowing her to serve as a trusted advisor and advocate. Her experience gives her the ability to foster strong relationships, communicate effectively with coaches and help ensure that Ohio State’s programs operate at the highest level of success.
A native of North Canton, Ohio, Hoyt was a standout student-athlete at Penn State University, competing on a full athletic scholarship in gymnastics. She helped lead the Nittany Lions to four consecutive NCAA Championship appearances and was a two-time recipient of the “Penn State Pride” award for outstanding team leadership.
Hoyt holds a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication and Media Studies from Penn State (1998) and a Master’s degree in Sport Coaching from Ohio State University. With a career spanning coaching, leadership development, and athletics administration, she remains deeply committed to advancing collegiate athletics and fostering success for student-athletes both on and off the field.
