- Title:
- Offensive Line Coach / Run Game Coordinator
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day announced in February 2025 the addition of Tyler Bowen to the coaching staff as offensive line coach and run game coordinator. The 2026 season will be his second on the Buckeyes’ staff.
In his first season at Ohio State, Bowen helped guide the Buckeyes back to the College Football Playoff for a second straight year, to a win over Michigan in Ann Arbor and to their first Big Ten Championship appearance since 2020. On an individual level, he coached tackle Austin Siereveld and guard Luke Montgomery to second-team All-Big Ten honors, while center Carson Hinzman earned first-team AFCA All-America recognition and all five of Ohio State’s starting linemen received all-conference honors. Bowen also mentored rotational offensive lineman Ethan Onianwa, a graduate transfer from Rice, who was later selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, extending a streak in which at least one Ohio State offensive lineman has been drafted every year since 2016.
Bowen’s work with Ohio State’s offensive line helped fuel the Buckeyes’ status as one of just two FBS schools to produce a 3,500-yard passer, a 1,000-yard receiver and a 1,000-yard rusher in each of the past two seasons.
Bowen came to Ohio State with seven years of experience at Power Four programs, along with a stint in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars. From 2017 through 2024, with stops at Maryland, Penn State and Virginia Tech, he coached the offensive line, tight ends and quarterbacks and served as an offensive coordinator at both Penn State and Virginia Tech. While in State College, Bowen recruited tight end Tyler Warren, who won the Mackey Award in 2024, and offensive tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu, the 11th overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Over three seasons on the Penn State staff from 2018 through 2020, Bowen coached the Nittany Lions’ tight ends and was promoted to co-offensive coordinator for the 2020 season. He also served as the interim offensive coordinator for Penn State’s 2019 Goodyear Cotton Bowl victory over Memphis, when the Nittany Lions rushed for 396 yards in a 53-39 win.
Bowen’s Virginia Tech offense averaged nearly 180 rushing yards per game in 2024. In 2023, quarterback Kyron Drones passed for 2,085 yards and 17 touchdowns while also rushing for 818 yards and five scores.
Prior to his tenure at Penn State, Bowen served as the offensive line coach at his alma mater, the University of Maryland, during the 2017 season. The Helena, Ga., native spent two years at Fordham, serving as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2016 after joining the Rams as offensive line coach in 2015. Under his direction in 2016, Fordham’s offense led the Patriot League and ranked fourth in the FCS in both scoring offense (40.1 points per game) and total offense (498.2 yards per game).
Bowen began his coaching career at Maryland in 2010 before moving on to Towson in 2013 as tight ends coach and Penn State in 2014 as a graduate assistant.
He and his wife, Ginny, have two children, a daughter and a son. Bowen earned his bachelor’s degree in communication and his master’s degree in minority and urban education from the University of Maryland.
Ohio State (2025-Present)
In his first season at Ohio State, Bowen helped guide the Buckeyes back to the College Football Playoff for a second straight year, to a win over Michigan in Ann Arbor and to their first Big Ten Championship appearance since 2020.
- 2025:
- Bowen’s offensive line helped propel Ohio State to a perfect 12-0 regular season, a win over Michigan, a Big Ten Championship Game appearance for the first time since 2020 and a second straight College Football Playoff berth.
- Offensively, the Buckeyes averaged 33.4 points per game and ranked fifth nationally in average time of possession. Up front, Bowen’s unit allowed just 1.14 sacks per game, the 12th-fewest in the country, and 4.00 tackles for loss per game, which ranked 15th nationally. That group also helped freshman Bo Jackson emerge as one of the nation’s top young running backs, as he rushed for 1,090 yards with six touchdowns and six 100-yard games. Jackson became just the fifth true freshman in program history to top 1,000 rushing yards, earning Freshman All-America honors while ranking third nationally among freshmen in rushing.
- Through the air, Bowen’s group helped redshirt freshman Julian Sayin become one of the nation’s top quarterbacks. Sayin was a Heisman Trophy finalist and the Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Year, while leading the nation in completion percentage at 77.0 and ranking among the national leaders in passing efficiency, touchdown passes, yards per attempt and quarterback rating.
- Individually, Bowen mentored center Carson Hinzman, who earned first-team All-America honors from the AFCA, and guard Luke Montgomery, who earned second-team All-America honors from the same outlet. Montgomery and tackle Austin Siereveld were second-team All-Big Ten selections by the coaches, while Montgomery also earned second-team recognition from the media. Media third-team All-Big Ten honors went to right tackle Phillip Daniels, left tackle Austin Siereveld, right guard Tegra Tshabola and Hinzman.
- Bowen mentored rotational offensive lineman Ethan Onianwa, a graduate transfer from Rice, who was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, extending Ohio State’s streak of having at least one offensive lineman drafted every year since 2016. His work up front also helped make Ohio State one of just two FBS programs to produce a 3,500-yard passer, a 1,000-yard receiver and a 1,000-yard rusher in each of the past two seasons.
Virginia Tech (2022-24)
Bowen spent three seasons at Virginia Tech, serving as tight ends coach in 2022 before being promoted to offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2023 and 2024. During that span, he helped the Hokies develop into a more productive rushing offense and guided one of the program’s most dynamic quarterbacks in Kyron Drones. Virginia Tech also reached back-to-back bowl games in his second and third seasons in Blacksburg for the first time since 2018-19.
In 2023, Virginia Tech averaged 391.5 total yards and 29.5 points per game and finished 7-6 with a Military Bowl victory. Drones passed for 2,085 yards and 17 touchdowns while also rushing for 818 yards and five scores, including a bowl-record 176 rushing yards in the win over Tulane. RB Bhayshul Tuten also emerged as a key playmaker, earning All-ACC Third Team honors after rushing for 863 yards and 10 touchdowns. In 2024, the Hokies averaged 367.8 total yards and 28.2 points per game and finished 6-7. The offense leaned heavily on the run game, with Tuten producing 1,159 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns, as the Hokies ranked fifth in the ACC in rushing that season.
Jacksonville Jaguars (2021)
During his lone season in the NFL, Bowen served as the Jacksonville Jaguars’ tight ends coach. He helped NFL veteran James O’Shaughnessy produce the second-best season of his career, while the Jaguars won three games with rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence leading a young roster.
Penn State (2018-20)
Bowen served in a multitude of roles during his three-year tenure at Penn State, but he concluded his last year as co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach. During his time at State College, he mentored Pat Freiermuth, the 2021 NFL second-round pick, who earned All-Big Ten honorable mention recognition after catching eight touchdown passes in 2020, the second-most by any tight end in the FBS that season. Bowen also helped lead Penn State to a 53-39 win over Memphis in the 2019 Goodyear Cotton Bowl in his first game after taking over play-calling duties, as the Nittany Lions set a bowl record with 53 points, tied a Cotton Bowl mark with five rushing touchdowns and finished with the second-highest rushing total in bowl history with 396 yards.
His Penn State tight end room also included Nick Bowers, who signed with the Las Vegas Raiders as a free agent in 2020; Mike Gesicki, a second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins in 2018. Not to be outdone, Bowen recruited tight end Tyler Warren, who won the Mackey Award in 2024, and offensive tackle Olumuyiwa Fashanu, the 11th overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Maryland (2017)
Bowen served as the offensive line coach at his alma mater of Maryland during the 2017 season. The Terrapins began that season with a 51-41 upset win at No. 23 Texas that featured 263 rushing yards and four ground scores. Maryland also opened its 2017 Big Ten schedule with a 31-24 victory at Minnesota that featured 262 rushing yards and a pair of TDs. One of his offensive line pupils, T Derwin Gray, was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Fordham (2015-16)
Bowen spent two seasons at Fordham, where he served as offensive line coach in 2015 before being promoted to offensive coordinator and offensive line coach in 2016. Under his direction, the Rams led the Patriot League and ranked fourth in the FCS in both scoring offense (40.1 points per game) and total offense (498.2 yards per game). Fordham also finished second in the FCS in passing efficiency in 2015 and ninth in scoring offense, while Bowen tutored 2018 NFL fourth-round pick Chase Edmonds, who led the FCS in rushing and earned All-America honors in both 2015 and 2016.
Background
Bowen served as a graduate assistant at Penn State in 2014 after coaching tight ends at Towson in 2013, where he helped the Tigers advance to the FCS Championship Game and reach a No. 2 national ranking. He began his collegiate coaching career at Maryland in 2010 as a student assistant before working as a graduate assistant from 2011-12, focusing on the offensive line and wide receivers while helping the Terrapins defeat East Carolina in the 2010 Military Bowl.
Bowen earned his bachelor’s degree in communication and master’s degree in minority and urban education from the University of Maryland.
