
Six Buckeyes to Wrestle in Final Session at B1G Championships Sunday

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Three Buckeyes will wrestle for third-place this afternoon in addition to Sammy Sasso’s title match at 149 pounds at the 2022 Big Ten Championships at Pinnacle Bank Arena on the University of Nebraska campus. The title matches will be televised by the Big Ten Network starting at 3:30 p.m.
Carson Kharchla (165), Ethan Smith (174) and Kaleb Romero (184) all won their Session III bouts in the consolation semifinals to advance to third-place matches. Those bouts will be streamed at bigtenplus.com (4:30 p.m.).
Malik Heinselman (125) and Dylan D’Emilio (141) fell in their consolation semifinal bouts and will wrestle for fifth-place (4:30 p.m./bigtenplus.com).
Gavin Hoffman (197) and Tate Orndorff (HWT) each battled for seventh-place Sunday afternoon but neither was able to secure a win in their final matches of the championships.
Session III – 2022 Big Ten Championships (March 6), Lincoln, Nebraska
125 | (7) Michael DeAugustino (NU) def. (4) Malik Heinselman (OSU) | D, 3-2
Neither wrestler was able to score in the opening period. DeAugustino escaped to start the second for the 1-0 lead. Heinselman tied the match with an escape of his own early in the third but DeAugustino countered with a takedown with 40 seconds left in the match. Heinselman added another escape but fell by decision, 3-2. Heinselman moves to the fifth-place match.

141 | (5) Jakob Bergeland (MINN) def. (7) Dylan D’Emilio (OSU) | D, 4-3
The bout went to the second period without a score for either wrestler. Bergeland maintained control the entire second period building two minutes of riding time. Bergeland escaped to start the third for the 1-0 advantage and added a takedown plus a point for riding time to win by decision, 4-3, after a late D’Emilio escape and takedown.

Kharchla scored the first points with a takedown followed by a Ferrante escape for the 2-1 lead. Two more takedown, escapes made it 6-3 Ohio State to start the second. Kharchla scored a reversal followed by a Ferrante escape to lead 8-4 to start the third. Ferrante added a point for an escape to start the third, his final point of the match. Kharchla added a takedown to win by decision, 11-5. He will wrestle for third-place later this afternoon.

174 | (5) Ethan Smith (OSU) def. (3) Mikey Labriola (NEB) | SV-1, 4-2
Labriola scored first with an escape in the second period after a scoreless first. Smith got the reversal to take the 2-1 lead with about 40 seconds to go in the third but the points came off the board briefly following a Nebraska challenge but were then reinstated. A Labriola escape and no call takedown was reviewed with 19 seconds to go but stood to send the match into sudden victory where Smith scored a takedown to win, 4-2. Smith advanced to the third-place match later today.

184 | (3) Kaleb Romero (OSU) def. (8) Kyle Cochran (MD) | D, 5-2
Romero put the first points on the board with a takedown followed by a Cochran escape to make it 2-1 Buckeyes. Cochran tied it on an escape in the second but Romero regained the advantage with a late takedown in the second and added an escape in the third to win by decision, 5-2, to advance to the third-place match.

197 | (7) Greg Bulsak (RUT) def. (9) Gavin Hoffman (OSU) | D, 6-1
Hoffman got on the board first with an escape to start the second but Bulsak countered with a takedown and two-point near fall for a 4-1 lead. Bulsak added a point for an escape to open the third and added a point for riding time to win by decision, 6-1.
HWT | (6) Christian Lance (NEB) def. (8) Tate Orndorff (OSU) | D, 3-2
Lance scored first with an escape to start the second after a scoreless first three minutes. Orndorff tied it at 1-all with an escape early in the third period. Lance scored a takedown with over a minute left in the match for the 3-2 lead, after a Tate escape, to win by decision, 3-2.
