Columbus, Ohio – Jessica Davenport and Brandie Hoskins, both juniors on the Ohio State women’s basketball team, were in the starting lineup Wednesday for Team USA’s opening-round contest in the 2005 World University Games in Izmir, Turkey. Davenport and Hoskins combined for 22 points to help Team USA to an 88-64 victory over the Czech Republic.
Davenport (Columbus, Ohio/ Independence) was one of four Americans to score in double digits with 13 points, while Hoskins (Dayton, Ohio/ Chaminade-Julienne) contributed nine. Davenport, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year, connected on 6-of-10 attempts from the floor and pulled down seven rebounds. Hoskins knocked down 3-of-5 field goals and was perfect at the free throw line, going 3-for-3.
Despite trailing the Czechs, 19-18, at the end of the first quarter, the USA began to pull away by outscoring the Czechs, 29-17, in the second stanza. Davenport started a 9-0 run with a bucket off an offensive rebound as the Americans extended to a 47-36 halftime advantage.
Hoskins helped the U.S. lead grow in the third quarter, pouring in five straight points to boost Team USA’s advantage to 59-41 with 5:42 remaining. The U.S. extended to a 70-50 lead by the end of the third period and cruised through the fourth quarter for the win.
For the game, the U.S. shot 50.7 percent (36-71) from the floor and committed only seven turnovers against the Czech Republic’s 18. After posting an impressive 60 shooting percentage from the floor in the first half, the Czech Republic managed to shoot only 32 percent in the second half to finish 25-for-54 overall.
Team USA takes the court again tomorrow against South Africa. The game is slated for a 3:30 a.m. (EDT) start.
