Ohio State Starts the Season with 2-1 Win over Minnesota State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1/1 Ohio State women’s hockey team kicked the 2022-23 season off with a 2-1 win at RV/RV Minnesota State on Friday afternoon in Mankato, Minn. The Buckeyes (1-0-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) were led by Jenn Gardiner and Gabby Rosenthal who each picked up two points in the game.

How it Happened

The Buckeyes tallied their first goal of the year at 9:54 into the game. Despite being down 1-0 after a Minnesota State goal at 3:15 in the first period, Rosenthal scored the equalizer from the top of the left faceoff circle. Gardiner and Emma Maltais earned assists on the goal. The teams took the locker room at the first intermission tied 1-1.

Ohio State was quick to take the lead in the second period. Gardiner outskated a couple of Maverick defensemen to record her first goal of the year and give the Buckeyes the 2-1 advantage. While Gardiner’s goal was the only goal of the period, the Buckeyes dominated possession in the second frame. The Buckeyes held a 22-12 shots on goal advantage after 40 minutes.

Gardiner’s game-winner turned out to be the final score of the afternoon. Ohio State added ten shots on goal in the third period to finish with a 32-16 advantage over the Mavericks.

In net for the Buckeyes, Amanda Thiele made 15 saves for the Buckeyes.

Game Notes

  • In her first game in the Scarlet and Gray since the 2020-21 season, Emma Maltais recorded an assist to bring her career point total to 159. She is now one point away for being tied for most career points by a forward at Ohio State. Currently third is Jana Harrigan with 160.
  • Maltais’ assist is her 104th of her career, bringing her 19 helpers away from the program record of 123 career assists.
  • Making their collegiate debut on Friday were Sofie Lundin, Sloane Matthews, Sydney Morrow and Emma Peschel.
  • The Buckeyes’ win over the Mavericks is the team’s 11th consecutive win, extending its program record win streak. The victory also marked the first season opener road win since the 2018-19 season when Ohio State visited Quinnipiac and won 3-2.
  • Gardiner’s game-winning goal is her sixth of her career.
  • For the sixth time in her seven seasons at Ohio State, Nadine Muzerall has led her team to victory in the opening game of the season.
