Ohio State Men Set for B1G Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9 Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team makes the trip to West Lafayette, Ind. this week for the 2022 Men’s Big Ten Swimming & Diving Championships at Purdue. The four-day meet will be held Wednesday, Feb. 23 through Saturday, Feb. 26 at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center.
Schedule of Events
Competition is set to begin at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23. For Thursday through Saturday, swimming prelims will start at 10 a.m. and diving prelims will start at 12 p.m. Finals are set to begin at 5:30 p.m. ET.

Buckeyes At the Big Ten Championships
- Ohio State earned a third-place finish at the 2021 Big Ten Championships with five individual titles. The Buckeyes have finished top three at the conference championship meet for the last 13 seasons.
- In the history of the program, the team has won 13 team championships. The last time the Buckeyes won the men’s conference crown was 2010.
- Ohio State swimmers and divers have won a total of 187 individual Big Ten titles and 23 relay titles.
Returning Champions
- Of Ohio State’s three Big Ten title winners last season, Sem Andreis and Joey Canova return to the roster for the 2022 conference championships. Andreis, a senior from Bologna, Italy, earned the 50 and 100 freestyle titles while Canova, a senior from Gaithersburg, Md., took the 3-meter dive crown.
- Andreis’ winning times in the 50 freestyle (19.05) and 100 freestyle (42.23) at the 2021 championships are respectively the fifth and sixth-fastest times raced in the history of the meet.
- Canova’s 3-meter title was the team’s first on the board since 2013. He was also named the 2021 Big Ten Co-Diver of the Championship, an award that has been won by Buckeyes for the last two seasons with junior Lyle Yost earning the honor in 2020.
- Nineteen of the Buckeyes’ point scorers from last years’ Big Ten Championships returned to the roster this season.
Buckeyes in the Big Ten This Year
- Ohio State is 2-2 against Big Ten teams this season, having competed against Indiana twice and Michigan and Penn State once this year.
- The Buckeyes have raced to top five times in the conference in seven events this year. Hunter Armstrong leads the way with three top five times: 50 freestyle (19.37), 100 freestyle (42.71) and 100 backstroke (45.66). Ruslan Gaziev owns the No. 3 time in the 100 freestyle (42.66) and No. 4 time in the 200 freestyle (1:33.20) in the Big Ten this year. Charlie Clark (14:53.34) and Fabio Dalu (14:53.34) are third and fourth in the conference in the 1650 freestyle while Alex Quach has the fifth-fastest time in the 200 butterfly (1:42.92).
- Lyle Yost and Joey Canova are averaging the fourth and fifth best dive scores in the Big Ten this season on the 1-meter board. Clay Chaplin and Jacob Fielding are fourth and fifth in the conference in 3-meter diving.
Ohio State Coaches
- The Buckeyes are led by director of swimming and diving Bill Dorenkott, who is in his 14th year at Ohio State and fifth as the director of men’s and women’s swimming and diving
- Ohio State head diving coach Justin Sochor is in his ninth year at the helm of the Buckeye diving contingent. He is a two-time Big Ten Men’s Diving Coach of the Year. He has guided five Buckeyes to Big Ten titles, including Joey Canova on the 3-meter board in 2021 and Lyle Yost on the platform in 2020.
