Ohio State, Denver Renew Series on Sunday Afternoon in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s non-conference tests continue this weekend as the No. 7 Buckeyes welcome Denver to Ohio Stadium for a noon faceoff on Sunday. The game will be streamed live on B1G+ (subscription required) with Brendan Gulick on the call.

Talkin’ Tickets
- The early forecast for Sunday in calling for partly sunny skies and temperatures in the low 60s. In other words: perfect lacrosse weather.

Briefly on the Buckeyes
- Coming off its second win over a top-10 ranked team this season, Ohio State is 5-1 on the year and ranked No. 7 in this week’s USILA Coaches Poll.
- The Buckeyes knocked off No. 10 Notre Dame last Saturday in their 2022 Ohio Stadium debut, getting seven points from Jack Myers and six from Jackson Reid.
- In goal, junior Skylar Wahlund saw his first extended action of the season and made seven games in two and a half quarters of play.
- Ohio State’s extra man unit was a perfect five-for-five on the day and currently leads the country, converting 77.3 percent of its opportunities.
- The Buckeyes currently have top-six ranked units nationally in scoring offense (fourth, 16.17 goals/game), extra-man offense (first, 77.3 percent), man-down defense (sixth, 76.5 percent), faceoffs (second, 69.9 percent) and ground balls per game (third, 37.50).
- Jack Myers is first in the Big Ten and fourth nationally in assists per game (3.33). One of his favorite targets, Jason Knox, leads the country in extra-man goals with seven.
- Justin Inacio’s .679 faceoff win percentage is third-best nationally and leads the conference.
History Against the Pioneers
- The Buckeyes and Pioneers have one of the longest-running non-conference series’ in program history, having met 27 times previously. Ohio State leads the series, 15-12, with an 8-3 edge in Columbus.
- The two teams had met every season from 1997 through 2018. In 2019, a snowstorm in Denver didn’t allow the Pioneers to make the trip to Columbus and in 2020 the Denver game was the first one missed after the remainder of the season was canceled. Last year, the two teams did not play due to the Big Ten-only schedule.
- Ohio State and Denver were conference members together in the Great Western Lacrosse League and ECAC. They’ve also played once before in the ECAC Tournament Championship Game (a 11-10 Ohio State victory on May 4, 2013) and once in the NCAA Quarterfinals (a 15-13 Denver victory on May 16, 2015).
- The Buckeyes have won the last two meetings between the two teams at Ohio Stadium – a 16-7 win over the then-No. 1 Pioneers in 2017 and a 13-11 triumph in 2015.
- Ohio State and Denver have played eight one-goal games and the Buckeyes have won five of them. The last one was Ohio State’s 11-10 win in the ECAC Championship Game in 2013.
About the Offense
- Ohio State has scored 96 goals in its first six games, which is the most of any team in program history over its first six games of a season.
- Prior to this year, the six-game record for goals to start a season occurred in 1988 when that squad score 87 times, including a 25-goal game vs. Stanford.
- The Buckeyes’ record for average goals per game in a season is 13.4, set in 1966. The 1978 team averaged 13.3 and the 2008 squad is third at 13.1.
- With its 16.17 goals per game average, the 2022 Buckeyes are nearly three goals per game ahead of the pace set in 1966.
A Total Team Effort
- While much attention has rightfully been paid to Jack Myers, who has 18 goals, 20 assists and 38 points, his teammates of Ohio State’s starting attack unit each has 16 or more points.
- Jason Knox checks in with 15 goals and an assist while Colby Smith has 13 goals and seven assists.
- Combined, the Buckeyes’ starting attack has produced 50 goals and 23 assists.
- Nine players have six or more points through the first six games and 17 different players have scored at least one goal.
A Quick Turnaround
- Just over 48 hours after Ohio State’s game with Denver finishes, the Buckeyes will be back at Ohio Stadium for a 7 p.m. contest against Dartmouth.
- It was will be the quickest turnaround for a game since 2018 when the Buckeyes face Marquette and Detroit in the Midwest Lacrosse Classic on March 2 and March 4, 2018.
That and That
- Jackson Reid has 97 career goals and is three shy of becoming the 13th player in program history to reach the century mark.
- Jack Myers moved into the top 10 all-time in career assists. He now has 68 in 35 games, good for the No. 10 spot. Mike Norton (2000-03) and Craig Cooper (1974-78) own the No. 8 spot with 75 each.
- Myers is also close to entering the top 10 in career points. He has 149, just one behind Bill Rodgers for 11th place and six behind Curtis Smith, who ranks No. 10.
- Ohio State owns a 36-15 record at home since the start of the 2015 season and has won 25 of their last 32 home games over the past five seasons.
