LUBBOCK, Texas – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team (3-0) beat Rhode Island (2-3) in straight sets (25-13, 25-11, 25-14) on Friday to open action at the Red Raider Classic.
How it Happened
Ohio State got off to a quick start with the first six points on the floor amidst a Rhode Island timeout. OSU held an 11-5 lead before a 5-1 Rhody run cut the Buckeyes lead to two points at 12-10. Ohio State responded with three-consecutive points and would allow RI to get no closer than a five-point spread for the remainder of the set. OSU scored the final five points of the set to earn the 25-13 victory.
The Buckeyes and Rhody began set two at a 4-3 mark before OSU strung together a 7-0 run to take an 11-3 lead. Ohio State built its lead to as large as 14, leading 21-7, before Rhode Island scored four of the next five points. The Buckeyes scored the final three points to seal the 25-11 set win and did so on a solo block from Rylee Rader.
Rhode Island took its first lead of the match with the first point in set three. The set was close to start as neither team led by more than two points until Ohio State scored four unanswered points to lead 10-5. Rhody kept the margin at five, 13-8, before the Buckeyes scored seven of the next eight to take a commanding 20-9 lead. OSU captured the final three points to capture the match.
The Buckeyes continue play in the Red Raider Classic on Saturday, taking on Texas State at 11:30 a.m. ET before playing host Texas Tech at 8:30 p.m. ET. The Texas Tech match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
