No. 22 Men’s Lacrosse Dominates VMI, 19-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 22nd-ranked Ohio State men’s lacrosse team earned its first win of the season Saturday, dominating the Virginia Military Institute 19-0. Despite the rainy and windy weather conditions, the Buckeyes jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead after one period and led 17-0 by halftime en route to the big win.%^$
%^$Ryan Laffey (So., Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and Lance Vitt (Fr., Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) each scored three goals to lead the Buckeye offensive attack. Anthony Gilardi (So., Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) added two goals and two assists for the Buckeyes (1-2).%^$
%^$Ohio State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Mike Norton (Jr., Timonium, Md./Calvert Hall), scored just seven seconds into the contest off a feed from Anthony Kelly (Jr., North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius). On the ensuing faceoff, Kelly ran straight down the field and scored again, just six seconds later, to bump the lead to 2-0.%^$
%^$Curtis Smith (Victoria, British Columbia/Oak Bay), coming off a four-goal performance last week at No. 7 Georgetown, kept the offense coming as he scored the first of his two goals on the day at the 12:39 mark of the first period to give OSU a 3-0 advantage. His second goal, on the extra man opportunity with 50 seconds remaining, was the Buckeyes’ final – and ninth – of the first period.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes did not let up in the second. Vitt notched the first two goals of the period in the first 1:08 of the frame, pushing OSU’s lead to 11-0. OSU scored six more goals over the next 8:15 to take a commanding 17-0 lead into the lockerroom.%^$
%^$After a scoreless third period, Vitt and Chris Brown (Fr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto) added goals in the fourth period for the final margin of 19-0.%^$
%^$Ohio State outshot the Keydets 37-9 and won 19 of the 23 faceoffs. Three Buckeye goalkeepers stopped all eight VMI shots.%^$
%^$VMI falls to 0-2 with the defeat. The Buckeyes return to action Saturday at 4 p.m, battling Quinnipiac at Loyola College in Baltimore.%^$
