COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 8-ranked Ohio State women’s ice hockey team suffered its first loss of the season against the No. 1-ranked Wisconsin Badgers. With the loss, the Buckeyes dip to 4-1-0 overall, 2-1-0 WCHA and the Badgers improve to 5-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 WCHA. The teams will close the weekend series at 3:07 p.m. Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink.
The Nitty Gritty
Ohio State 0, Wisconsin 3
The Buckeyes and the Badgers came out flying at set the tone for a fast and physical contest between the two Top-10 teams. Just over five minutes into the period the Buckeyes tested their penalty kill unit once again as Ohio State was charged with too many men. The Scarlet and Gray defense held strong and blocked two of its ten first period shots. Ohio State finished the period with two successful penalty kills, bringing their total to 12-12. Wisconsin out shot Ohio state in the first period 12-6.
Ohio State struggled to stay out of the penalty box in the second period and the Badgers took advantage of one the many man advantage opportunities. Just over seven minutes into the period Wisconsin’s Abby Roque fired off a shot that nicked the inside of the crossbar to give the Badgers the 1-0 lead on the power play. The Buckeyes were a man down four times in the period including a late penalty call to give Wisconsin a 1:53 power play to open the third. In the second, the Buckeyes had the advantage in shots 7-6.
The Buckeyes came out fighting in the third and posted four shots on net but the Badgers extended their lead in the 19th minute as Sophie Shirley fired a long range shot into the Buckeye’s empty net. With Braendli back in the cage the Badgers took advantage of a quick momentum surge and fired another shot into the back of the net just 40 seconds later. The Badgers finished the contest with a 28-17 advantage in shots.
