State College, PA – The Ohio State men’s tennis went on the road and won a hard-fought match against Penn State Friday afternoon, 4-1.
The Buckeyes yet again come out of doubles play with the match lead at 1-0. Ohio State is yet to lose the doubles point in 2019. A rough start to the day from JJ Wolf and Martin Joyce was helped by victories from No. 3 doubles tandem of Alex Kobelt and Kyle Seelig and the No. 30 pair of Hunter Tubert and John McNally
Singles play is where the Buckeyes really had to earn their victory. Wolf, McNally and Joyce all dropped their first set against the Nittany Lions. This was just the second time Wolf lost a set dating back to October at the beginning of the 2018-19 campaign for the Cincinati native.
Joyce and Wolf would respond with wins of their own in the second sets of their matches and would both go on to seal their wins in the the third and final set. Meanwhile, Kyle Seelig dominated his opponent to a quick 6-2, 6-4 victory, helping alleviate the pressure on the Buckeyes. Unfortunatley, John McNally would go on to lose 2-6, 1-6, giving the Nittany Lions their lone point on the day.
The Buckeyes would finish the match with a 4-1 victory and their first conference victory of the season. Friday afternoon’s match was Ohio State’s first true road match of the season. Their next two opponents will be on the road, when the Buckeyes head to Texas to face the Texas Longhorns and Texas A&M on March 11 and 14.
