COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Fresh off a challenging stretch of Big Ten play, the Ohio State men's soccer team heads to George Mason Friday looking to return to the win column against the Patriots. The Buckeyes enter the matchup at 5-2-1 overall, while George Mason carries a 1-4-2 record into the contest.
Â
Ohio State opened the season with five-consecutive victories, including wins over Virginia Tech, DePaul, Memphis, Northern Kentucky and Kentucky. During that run, the Buckeyes outscored opponents 18-1 and recorded four shutouts. More recently, Ohio State tied Wisconsin before dropping conference matches against Rutgers and Washington, making the Friday non-conference road test an opportunity to regain momentum.
Â
The Buckeyes have been one of the nation's most productive offensive teams through eight matches. Ohio State is averaging 2.5 goals and 16.9 shots per game while owning a plus-12 goal differential. Defensively, the Buckeyes have allowed just eight goals and recorded four clean sheets.
Â
A balanced attack has fueled Ohio State's success. Forward Isaiah Chisolm leads the team with seven goals and 14 points despite appearing in only four matches. Chisolm scored three times against Northern Kentucky and has converted all three of his penalty-kick opportunities this season. Midfielder Aaron Hurge ranks second on the squad with eight points on three goals and two assists, while Nyle Waugh has added three goals and one assist. Playmaker Josue Youta leads the Buckeyes with four assists and a team-high 27 shots.
Â
In goal, Patrick McLaughlin has started all eight matches and owns a 0.79 goals-against average with four shutouts. Ohio State has limited opponents to just 7.5 shots per game, one of the key reasons behind its strong defensive numbers.
Â
George Mason enters the weekend following a 2-2 draw at Saint Joseph's. The Patriots have shown offensive potential, scoring 12 goals through seven matches, but have struggled to close out games and are still searching for their first road victory. Six of George Mason's seven matches have been decided by one goal or ended in a draw.
Â
The Patriots are led offensively by Kelly Janssen, who has three goals, while Jaime Godinho, Matias de Jesus and James Eliuda each have six points. George Mason averages 1.71 goals per game and has scored multiple goals in four of its seven contests.
Â
Defensively, George Mason has allowed 16 goals and is conceding 2.29 goals per match. Goalkeepers Angel Hernandez and Jack Desroches have combined for 29 saves this season. The Patriots also have been tested by a demanding schedule that has included matches against Vermont, Marshall, West Virginia and Davidson.
