McLaughlin Earns Shutout in Net

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (1-0) opened the 2026 season Thursday with a 1-0 win over visiting Virginia Tech (0-1) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium (Att: 1,266).

Ohio State scored the first goal of the match in the 58' when freshman Jack Wayne connected on a corner with senior transfer Isaiah Chisolm, who headed in his 12^th career goal and first as a Buckeye.

Several newcomers made their first starts as Buckeyes. Transfers Christian Baumgartner, Victor Labite, Martin Wurschmidt, Chisolm, Josué Youta, Ryan Hannosh and Elijah Bishop all made their first appearances in the starting lineup. Wayne entered as a substitute late in the first half for his first appearance.
The Buckeyes created the majority of the chances in the win with a shot advantage of 19-6. Ohio State also had the advantage in shots on goal, 8-2.
Patrick McLaughlin got the start for the Buckeyes in goal. He improved to 7-2-2 in his 11th career start. The win was his second career shutout.
