COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State hops out of Big Ten play for a neutral site non-conference Valentine’s Day show-down with No. 15 Virginia on Saturday in Nashville. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. ET and the game will televised nationally on FOX. Gus Johnson and former Ohio State All-American Jim Jackson will call the action.
The game can also be heard on the Ohio State Radio Network from Learfield. Paul Keels and former Buckeye captain Ron Stokes are on the call.
- This is the latest into a season the Buckeyes have played a non-conference game since beating Florida International on March 4, 1987 in Columbus.
- This will be just the seventh all-time meeting between the teams and the series is tied 3-3.
- The last two meetings, both won by Virginia, were decided by a combined seven points. Those two meetings came as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in 2015 and 2016.
- Virginia will be the fourth ACC opponent this season for the Buckeyes. They beat Notre Dame at home on Nov. 16 and then fell at the buzzer at Pitt on Nov. 28. The third game was a great back and forth battle with North Carolina in the CBS Sports Classic with the Tar Heels eventually pulling out a 71-70 victory on Dec. 20 in Atlanta.
- Saturday’s game will be just Ohio State’s fifth game in Nashville, sort of. The Buckeyes won at Vanderbilt in 1932 and then the NCAA vacated their game at Vanderbilt in 1998 as well as the first and second round NCAA Tournament games in 2000.
- This will be Ohio State’s 32nd time play a game on Valentine’s Day. The Buckeyes are 16-15 all-time on Feb. 14, including a 5-0 mark in non-conference games.
- The Buckeyes are coming off an 89-82 victory over fellow bubble team USC on Wednesday night at the Schottenstein Center. Ohio State shot 60 percent in the second half and was 24-of-25 from the free throw line, including 14-of-14 in the second half. Bruce Thornton led the way with 21 points, eight assists, six rebounds and two steals. Devin Royal made all of his two-point attempts and finished with 19 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
- Thornton moved into fifth place on the school’s all-time scoring list in the win over USC. He currently has 1,950 career points and his next assist will be the 500th of his career. He is looking to become just the second Big Ten player with 2,000 points, 500 assists and 500 rebounds (currently at 462 rebounds).
- Puff Johnson has started to settling after joining the team on Jan. 17. He made a pair of clutch three-pointers in the second half vs. USC and finished with eight points.
- Taison Chatman has scored 48 points and made 10 three pointers in the last five games. That comes after scoring just 27 points in his first 14 games of the season.
- Virginia has won its last five games and enters the game at No. 18 in the NET rankings. The Cavaliers are one of the better rebounding teams in the country and the average more than 14 offensive rebounds per game.
