
Ohio State Starts WCHA Slate with 5-2 Win Over St. Thomas

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State women's hockey team won its first Western Collegiate Hockey Association game of the season Friday, taking down St. Thomas, 5-2, at Lee & Penny Anderson Arena in St. Paul, Minn.
The Buckeyes improved to 3-0-0 on the year with the win over the Tommies (2-1-0, 0-1-0 WCHA).

How it Happened
- Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first period. Ohio State outshot St. Thomas, 9-4, and Buckeye netminder Taylor Kressin stood tall in her first game of the season to keep the Tommies off the board in the opening period.
- The Buckeye offense came to life in the second period, with Ohio State scoring four goals in the middle frame and outshooting the Tommies, 15-10.
- Senior forward Joy Dunne, who had a hand in all four second period goals, tallied both her and the Buckeyes' first goal of the game 1:43 into the period. Mira Jungåker sent a shot towards net from the blue line and Dunne was in the slot to redirect the puck into the St. Thomas net.
- At 10:53, Hilda Svensson doubled the Buckeye lead. Jungåker started the play by winning the puck back along the half boards in the Tommies' zone and dumping it behind the net to Dunne. Dunne send a backhanded pass to Svensson, who put the puck past the glove of St. Thomas goalie Dani Strom.
- St. Thomas cut the Buckeye lead back down to one with a goal at 14:57.
- Ohio State responded to the Tommies' goal with another two. With just under four minutes to play in the second period, both teams were skating 4-on-4 for coincidental minor penalties. The Buckeyes won the ensuing faceoff, and Kate Viel scored eight seconds later with an assist from Joy Dunne for the 3-1 Ohio State lead.
- The Buckeyes tallied their fourth and final goal of the period with 10 seconds on the clock. Ohio State's top forward line of Jocelyn Amos, Dunne and Svensson each earned a point on the goal, with Dunne recording the shot that lit the lamp.
- Ohio State and St. Thomas both recorded a goal in the third. The Buckeyes' score came from Sanni Vanhanen at 15:23. She buried a rebounded shot from Leah Wicks for the 5-1 Buckeye lead before the Tommies added a second goal at 18:27 for the final 5-2 score. The Buckeyes finished the game with 16 shots on goal in the final frame and held the Tommies to just five.
- Dunne led the team with four points on the day, all of which came in the second period. Amos and Jungåker recorded multi-point games with two assists.
- Viel is the first Buckeye rookie to record a goal this season and the third to tally a point. She is also the first defender to score this year.
- Kressin made 17 saves for the Buckeyes and finished the day with a .895 save percentage. She has made double digit saves in six of her seven games played for her career. The sophomore is now 7-0-0 for her career.
- Dunne, Jungåker, Svensson and Viel were a team-best plus-four on the ice Friday against the Tommies.
- Ellah Hause led the team with two blocked shots.
- Ohio State won the faceoff battle, 36-32. Amos won a game-high 15 faceoffs and Rylee Bartz added 11 wins at the dot.
