SEATTLE, Wash. – Ohio State senior guard Bruce Thornton scored 28 points and freshman forward Amare Bynum scored 20 but a second half Washington run was enough to push the Huskies past Ohio State 81-74 on Sunday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Buckeyes are now 11-5 overall on the season and an even 3-3 in the conference.
Thornton scored 19 of his 28 in the second half as he has now surpassed 1,800 points in his career. Bynum’s 20 points were a season-high for the freshman, who also pulled-down four rebounds and had a block.
Devin Royal was the third Buckeye in double figures with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Christoph Tilly had eight points and four rebounds but played just 15 minutes due to an injury. Fellow big man Ivan Njegovan stepped up in his absence and finished with four points, six rebounds and a pair of assists.
The Buckeyes ended up out-rebounding one of the conference’s better rebounding teams 39-29. However, Washington shot 14-of-28 (50 percent) in both halves to keep hold of the lead.
The first 20 minutes didn’t provide much separation. The teams made the same amount of three-pointers and free throws and the Buckeyes made one more shot to lead 38-36. Bynum had 12 of his 20 points in the first half.
The Buckeyes came out of the break and pushed the lead out to seven but then a quick 12-0 Washington run gave the Huskies their largest lead of the day to that point at 50-45, forcing an OSU timeout. That proved to be the turning point as Washington would hold the lead the rest of the way.
Ohio State got as close as 60-59 with 7:20 to play but UW scored the next five points and would hold on down the stretch.
