COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State battled Northwestern to a 0-0 draw on Thursday night at Medicine Field at Martin Stadium on the shores of Lake Michigan.
This was the fourth consecutive scoreless draw to open Big Ten play for the Buckeyes who are now 4-1-5 overall.
Senior goalkeeper Molly Pritchard and the Buckeye defense have not allowed a goal in 588:16 minutes of game action, which is the second-longest streak in program history. The three goals allowed on the year are the fewest allowed through 10 matches in program history.
Both Ohio State and Northwestern played through a back-and-forth defensive battle with few clear scoring chances in the opening minutes. The Buckeyes started aggressively, winning an early corner in the first minute and testing Northwestern's keeper with a shot from Callie Tumilty that went off target.
At the other end, Northwestern answered with pressure of their own, including a shot from Kennedy Roesch in the ninth minute and a dangerous effort by Keira Kemmerley in the 19th, which Ohio State goalkeeper Molly Pritchard saved at the bottom center of the net.
Both teams leaned heavily on set pieces, with Ohio State creating opportunities through corners in the 21st, 26th, and 43rd minutes, while Northwestern forced a series of corners midway through the half. Goalkeepers Pritchard and Nyamma Nelson anchored their defenses, each recording crucial saves to keep the game level.
The second half opened with Northwestern pushing forward, quickly earning a corner in the 46th minute and another in the 48th. Pritchard continued to be sharp in goal, stopping another Roesch attempt in the 58th minute. Ohio State responded with offensive pressure of their own, highlighted by shots from Ava Bramblett and Mia McSweeney, though neither could find the frame.
As the clock wound down, the Buckeyes created some of their best chances of the night. McSweeney forced Nelson into a save in the 89th minute, followed seconds later by another stop on strong Netta-Nina Hiltunen's strike. Ohio State earned a corner in the final seconds, but Northwestern cleared to preserve the scoreless draw.
