James Trotter advanced to the third round of qualifying

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former Buckeye national champions JJ Tracy and Robert Cash are two of the Top 75 double players in the world and have earned a spot in next week’s French Open. Fellow national champ James Trotter also had a good run in single qualifying, reaching the third round.
Tracy is the youngest ranked doubles player in the Top 75 as he is ranked No. 67, which is a career-high for him. Cash has also ascended to a career-high ranking of No. 72. They will open on Wednesday against Rohan Bopanna and Adam Pavlasek.
The duo has had a great clay court run so far this spring. They won an ATP Challenger clay court title in Sarasota, Fla., in early April and then went to France in late April and won another title, beating No. 58 Theo Arribage and No. 33 Hugo Nys in the final. They’ve also reached two other clay court semifinals in the last month and have two ATP semifinals appearances in Dallas and Delray Beach earlier this year as well.
Trotter entered the tournament ranked No. 174 in the world and took down world No. 101 and former USC standout Brandon Holt 6-1, 6-4 in the first round of qualifying. Holt had been playing the best tennis of his career. In the second round, Trotter outlasted Australia’s Jason Kubler in three sets 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-3. His run would end just one match short of the main draw as he lost in straight-sets to Germany’s Benjamin Hassan.
Since winning the NCAA Championship in May, Cash and Tracy have teamed to win six professional titles and reached the final in two other events. They also won a match in their US Open debuts last August.
Cash and Tracy’s NCAA doubles title in May of 2024 was a cap to a tremendous senior season. They teamed to win the season-opening ITA All-American Championship and would go on to post a 20-3 record. They were ranked in the top 5 all season and helped the top-ranked Buckeyes to an NCAA semifinal appearance as a team.
Individually, Cash finished his career with the most doubles wins in program history, 148. He passed the previous record of 139 and finished the year with an overall doubles mark of 35-7. The New Albany, Ohio native was also a career-best 25-4 in singles and finished his career with 228 career wins, which is top 10 in program history.
Tracy had a remarkable senior season, finishing with a combined 77-12 record. He also earned singles All-America honors in addition to his doubles All-America honors. The Powell, Ohio native finished his career with 235 career victories, fifth-most in program history.
Trotter was the ITA National Most Improved Senior in 2022-23 as he had a 29-1 singles record and a 22-8 doubles record that season. He won the NCAA Doubles Championship, was both a singles and doubles All-American, was the Big Ten Tournament’s Most Valuable Player and was a first team All-Big Ten honoree. He was also named Ohio State’s Male Athlete of the Year.
