COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 9 Ohio State dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 3 Michigan on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match at the Auer Tennis Complex.
The loss was just the third of the season for the Buckeyes who are now 16-3. They will close the regular season and Big Ten play this weekend with home matches against Wisconsin and Minnesota.
It was a sunny but cool afternoon outside at the Auer Tennis Complex. The doubles point came down to the match on court one, where Michigan was able to prevail. Then in singles, the Wolverines jumped out quick, but the Buckeyes rallied on a couple of courts to gather a little momentum. Michigan then pushed back for the final points and would take the non-conference affair.
How it Happened
- The Buckeye duo of Audrey Spencer and Nao Nishino got the first doubles win as they beat Julia Fliegner and Reese Miller 6-3 on court two. Spencer had a couple of key forehand winners to keep momentum.
- After a UM win on court three, the Wolverines took the doubles point as they broke at 4-4 on court one and held for a 6-4 victory.
- In singles, Nishino claimed the first win to even the team match at 1-1. She topped Reese Miller 7-5, 6-1 for her 22nd win of the year.
- Michigan then claimed wins on courts five, three and two to secure the team victory.
- The showcase match on court one was a good back-and-forth battle between No. 9 Luciana Perry and No. 3 Julia Fliegner. Fliegner jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the opening set and Perry rallied back to even the set at 5-5. Fliegner then held on a deuce point and broke in the next game to take the set 7-5. Perry again fell behind early in the second only to get back on serve at 5-4 when the match was halted.
- Audrey Spencer played well in the opening set on court six against Jessica Bernales and won 6-2. The two were on serve in the third set when the match ended.
The Schedule Ahead
- The Buckeyes will close the regular season with B1G home matches against No. 24 Wisconsin at noon Saturday and Minnesota at 11 a.m. Sunday. The Buckeye seniors will be recognized prior to the match vs. the Gophers.
- All home matches are slated to be played outside at the Auer Tennis Center. In the case of inclement weather, the match will be moved inside the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
