No. 12 Buckeyes Dominate Singles for Win over No. 14 USC

Ohio State is now 13-2 this spring

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12-ranked Ohio State women's tennis team wrapped up the weekend with a home win over No. 14 Southern California Sunday in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes are now 13-2 on the year, with a 7-1 Big Ten record. The Trojans move to 9-5 and are 3-3 in Big Ten.

The Trojans got an early lead when they clinched the doubles point over the Buckeyes with wins on courts one and two.

Ohio State quickly recovered in singles matches, winning four of the first six sets. Back-to-back victories from No. 98 Shelly Bereznyak on court five and No. 11 Sydni Ratliff on court three put the Buckeyes in the lead. No. 122 Nao Nishino and No. 8 Luciana Perry rounded out the victory for the Buckeyes.

How it Happened

The No. 15-ranked duo of Teah Chavez and Luciana Perry lost its match on court one against No. 3-ranked Lily Fairclough and Grace Piper. The Trojans used an early break en route to a 6-4 win.
The Trojans claimed the doubles point after the Buckeye duo of Audrey Spencer and Nao Nishino dropped the match on court two, 6-3, as USC won the last two games.
The court three match with the tandem of Sydni Ratliff and Sophia Cisse-Ignatiev was abandoned with the teams at 5-all.
No. 98 Shelly Bereznyak evened the score after she prevailed on court five over Jana Hossam, 6-2, 6-3. Her victory brought the score to 1-all.
Following soon after, No. 111 Ratliff posted a win on court three after she dominated over Fairclough on court three, 6-3, 6-2, giving the Buckeyes a 2-1 advantage.
On court four, No. 122 Nishino secured a 3-1 Buckeye lead when she posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over her opponent, No. 82 Immi Haddad.
On court two, No. 8 Perry locked in the victory for Ohio State with her 6-3, 6-3 triumph against Emma Charney.
When play was suspended, No. 35 Chavez and No. 96 Spencer were both starting their third sets after tying their matches with second-set wins.

The Schedule Ahead

Ohio State has two away matches next weekend. The team will play Northwestern at 5:30 p.m. ET Friday and Illinois at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
The Buckeyes will be back at home for a match against Penn State at noon April 12 and a non-conference match against No. 3 Michigan at 4 p.m. April 16.
Admission and parking are free for all Ohio State home matches.
