
Buckeyes Headed to NCAA Regional in Toledo

Ohio State is making its 11th NCAA appearance all-time
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's hockey team has earned an at-large berth into the 2025 NCAA Championship field and will head to Toledo, Ohio, for regional competition. The No. 3 seed Buckeyes will take on No. 2 Boston University at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Huntington Center, with ESPNU televising the matchup.

The other first-round matchup in Toledo features No. 1 seed Michigan State (the No. 2 overall seed) vs. No. 4 Cornell at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The regional final is slated for 4 or 6:30 p.m. Saturday and will be carried by ESPNU. The regional winner advances to the NCAA Frozen Four in St. Louis, with the semifinals April 10 and final April 12.

This marks the Buckeyes' 11th appearance in the NCAA tournament. The squad reached the Frozen Four in 2018 and 1998 and also earned a spot in 1999, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2017, 2019 and 2023.

Buckeyes vs. BU
Ohio State and BU have met three times, with the Terriers winning all three matchups. The squads faced off in the 2009 NCAA Tournament in Manchester, N.H., an 8-3 BU win. The other matchups were a 6-5 BU victory Dec. 28, 1973 in the RPI Tournament in Troy, N.Y., and a 2-1 Terrier win in the Mariucci Classic in Minneapolis, Minn., Dec. 27, 1998.

The Buckeyes competed in the 2019 Ice Breaker Tournament at the Huntington Center in Toledo, site of this year's regional. In the tourney, Ohio State posted a 2-2 overtime tie (shootout win) vs. Western Michigan in the first round and a 3-1 victory over RIT in the final to capture the tournament title.

This season, the Buckeyes are 24-13-2 and finished third in the Big Ten with a 14-9-1 3-2-0 ledger. The squad, under 2025 Big Ten Coach of the Year Steve Rohlik, reached the Big Ten Tournament final, where it fell on the road to top seed Michigan State in double overtime Saturday night, 4-3.

Five members of this year's Buckeye squad earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten accolades. Gunnarwolfe Fontaine leads the team with 40 points and shares the goal lead with Riley Thompson with 17 each. Thompson and Davis Burnside (14g, 19a) are tied for second on the team with 33 points apiece. Defenseman Damien Carfagna has 28 points, with seven goals and 21 assists, and is first on the team with 68 shot blocks. In goal, Logan Terness has a 2.27 goals-against average and .925 save percentage. Fontaine and Carfagna were both named to the Big Ten All-Tournament Team as well.

The Buckeyes are in the Top 20 nationally in scoring offense (3.18 goals per game), scoring defense (2.51 goals allowed per game) and scoring margin (+.67).
